Default manually timing

can someone explain how do u know what degree you are at when manually retarding the distributor. i know when you are pushing it back to the rear is advance and pushing toward the front is retard but how would u know what degree isit on, can u tell with the timming light, i need to retard it to 6 degree or so, but don't know how far i should push it.

Well, you can't do it with just any timing light. Some don't have advance on them. So in order to do it right and know you are retarding it a specific amount you will need a timing light with advance.

wow learned something that i thought i already knew. so i have my timing set to the center mark (red one), by what the picture showed that means it is at 16 degrees? the map i am running says it was tuned on 12 degrees so do i just move it a little past the top mark?

Use a dial-back light, so that at idle the TDC mark is lined up w/ the gun set to the same # that is in the idle portion of your map.

Holy run-on sentence.
