Default Subaru sound. Need to rebuild.

As you guys know I blew my motor and it sounds like a subaru. Someone told me it could be the piston rings or broken pistons.
What I want to know is- How hard is it to replace the pistons and rings?
Can I replace them without taking the motor out? Tips?

PS- I have pics. of the motor in the general Discussion forum.

you are right that sound is because you have at least 1 piston ring landing broken. AT LEAST ONE

Is it possible to replace the pistons & Rings without taking the motor out? From the top?

Does anyone have notes on removing and replacing them? Torque specs?

well, it doesnt have to be the piston rings... mine sounded like that and it was because of 4 burned valves. but that was because of nitrous. a little different from boost. my motor was rebuilt in the car. u just gotta take off the head, and the oil pain. undo your rod bolts, and push them out the top. torque specs... cant help ya there. good luck man

Try to get a better idea of why it's doing that. My car sounded like a Suby when I bent 4 of my exhaust valves on a freak mis-shift (11k!!). It might not be something in your block. What exactly happened with your blown motor?

this guys got it. you *could and it might be easier to just leave the block in the car. just have to jack it up. remember, rod bolts are torqued to 29ft/lbs.
