The finishing steps of my turbo are being done right now.. I had a Bosch BOV on my charge piping and just got a Tial 35MM .45 Wastegate. Guy at the performance shop said they were the same thing! He says the wastegate makes the pshhhhhh noise, same as a BOV. He said I dont need both! does this make sense!!?

Yes you need both. The wastegate lets the turbo run at a certain psi and not spin out of control. The BOV vents the air between the throttle body and the turbo when the throttle body shuts so you don't have compressor surge.

You should go back there and tell him you decided to go with just the BOV because he said you didn't need both. Then tell him your turbo blew up and see what he says. That would be kinda funny.

He's right Yes you do need both and yes a external waste gate does make noise if it's loud enough. Things like what you said is why I do all my own work and stopped all my friend from taking their cars to shops. Next thing you know he'll be talking you into Type-R badge's.

 

External wastegates sound like complete ---- when they blow off, its not like a blow off valve,

Yeah, I was positive I needed both, and he was wouldn't give up the argument. Would my Bosch BOV be really quiet? I haven't heard it yet, but its pretty small and black rubber. Would it be loud enough to be a show off with? lol. thanx for the help!

haha, nothing says performance better than a "wet lesbian ----- fart" coming from your civic.

 

It's pretty quiet, but still very noticable. It's sort of a mellow pshhhhhhh sound.

 

the sound get more violent the more boost you push. it also depends on how big valve outlet is. if it can vent more air out of your charge pipes it will sound more mellow. that just means its efficient.
