Hard to replace shift fork?
I'm going to be dropping an ls motor into my rex and this guy says he'll give me a ls tranny for $50 but it needs a new shift fork. How hard is it to change this out?
on a scale 1-10
1 being changing oil and 10 being engine internals.

it can be pretty tough but id guess that if it needs a shift fork its gonna need quite a few other gears, he was probably shifting it hard as ---- and grinding syncros... it may have taken out other gears when the shift fork broke... did you ever see what happend to BBKA's tranny?
The shift forks are made out of cast aluminum so they break easy when someone jams it home hard. I have seen 3 l3 transmissions with a broken shift fork.. only one person new they had a problem.. but if that loose piece comes around and gets into the spinning gears, you are done for. It takes a bit of work to get to the shift fork, but if you have tinkered with a trans before it's not hard... just watch out for the spring loaded ball bearing that is in the fork where it meets the shaft. If you haven't worked on a transmission it's better to have someone show you how to do it. But if there is a broken shift fork who knows what else is broken until it's all opened up and revealed. When mine went it went like a grenade going off in there.
