next year I'm going to be taking an AVS class (area vocational school) and I can take either automotive tech or welding tech, I also get to go work somewhere related to the training and get paid. any opinions on which one I should take?

Depends on what you want to do..
Personally.. I wouldn't want to have my hobby as my life's work. Tends to make a person not want to work on it when they get home, if they're doing it all day.
I found that out with network administration..
