hey i had a few questions. Do you think i could just mig weld a manifold together instead of tig? I mean will it be able to do just as good a job?

Also, where do you guys get the exhaust header part that bolts to the block itself?

just weld that manifold up, it doesnt matter what type of welds you use! as long as they are strong,

As for the flanges they can be got from BMC racing from this site, from what i have heard he is the ----!

 

that's true about welding it up, but i want to make sure the weld is strong. I have a lincoln 135 P and i want to make sure i get good penetration so that I can get a good weld. Hate for the manifold to heat up, crack, and there's goes the turbo. I was planning to just use the flux cored wire.

 

I dont think there is many tig welders on this site, most use the lincoln mig welders, were all pretty ghetto here so we use what comes to hand first

TIG welders are superior for pipework however, they don't cause as much warping and the melt-through is more easily controlled.

EDIT: Of course I meant TIG, typo!

 

umm i think youre thinking of tig... mig aint bad at all tho

 

I welded mine up with a mig pak 10, it's a little smaller than your 135, I used it gasless to do the thick stuff and I kept the welds going as long as I could so the heat would stay in the metal and the penetration would be better, I did 2 or 3 passes, it's solid as a rock, haven't ran it tho, should be running in a few days. When I was done I took it to the machine shop and had the flanges planed to make sure they were perfectly flat, cause it did warp a bit when I was welding it up.

I was going to get mine tig welded, but desided I didn't want to pay a welding shop $60 to do it, so I just used a 220 welder and it worked great....and it was free! Remember, its a homemade manifold, tig welds REALLY arn't going to help your air flow much anyways. In fact, my welds didn't even bead up on the inside of my manifold, and if yours do, use a dye grinder.

 

Many welding topics have been covered around here. Go with the MIG (that would be including shielding gas). I would ARC weld before I wire welded a manifold. What materials are you using to fab this thing?
