what is the equivalent size of AN to inch? newbie question!

3AN is it the same as 1/4 or 3/8
4an is it the same as 5/16??

I had always thought 4AN was a quarter of an inch. When i worked as a parts guy at a oil and gas comp i had to hand out all the tube, hose, and other fittings. The part numbers were always based on the inch. ie 1an is 1/16.....2an in 2/16 or 1/8........4an is 4/16 or 1/8 ect. I dunno maybe different manufacturers have different ways of numbering their fitting.

 

i really have no idea about an size to inch!
