brown cover zc?
Brown top ZC's are the JDM version of the D16a1, but better. The ZC's had better cams, different TB, better intake manifold than the D16a1. All parts are interchangeable between the two engines. Brown tops can be anywhere between 120-135hp depending on which one you get. The best ones are the ones that came out of the 1st gen CRX in Japan. They are also found in the JDM 1st gen integra.
I ran a 15.3 @ 89mph with a D16a1 and a 15.1 @90mph with the brown top ZC. Both with the same mods and in the same car.
Where did you find one and for how much?
They are fairly rare.
I picked mine up from a place in Toronto.

The Brown Top ZC is just like the Black Top ZC, but it has the earlier style mount setup on it, so you can bolt it in 1g crx's and 1g integras.

ZC simply means that it is a D-series 1.6l motor in SOHC, DOHC, SOHC VTEC mode and VTEC-E.
basic tree of a ZC started in '84 with 'brown top ZC (DOHC)' found on the JDM Civic/CRX Si (rated at 135ps - later downgraded to 120ps), then in '88 followed by the DOHC ZC and SOHC ZC which was found on Civic/CRX Si as well as 4WD EF Civic wagons and so on. (EF chassis)
90-3 Integra got ZC SOHC in Carb and FI version. 90-1 where non-obd, 92-3 where OBDI type but same specs otherwise.
In '92 thrid gen ZC was created in 2 forms. OBDI ZC DOHC, SOHC VTEC (both rated at 130ps). these were for the EG/EH chassis (Civic Si/Del Sol VXi/Domani). equivalent to our D16Z6 (sohc vtec). the DOHC was the same as previous generation but with OBDI electronics and some minor updates.
4th generation ZC was created in JDM as non-vtec and vtec ZC for the OBDII cars (our d16y7 and d16y
-jdm non-vtec zc obdII got y8 intake manifold on most of the cars and different type distributor.
horespower figures follow as :
84-9 DOHC ZC Carb = 115ps (brown cover)
84-7 DOHC ZC = 135ps (browncover)
88-9 DOHC ZC = 120ps (brown cover)
88-91 DOHC ZC = 130ps (black cover)
88-91 SOHC ZC = 120ps
90-5 SOHC ZC carb =105-110ps
92-5 DOHC ZC = 130ps
92-5 SOHC VTEC = 130ps
96-00 SOHC VTEC = 130ps
96-00 SOHC = 120ps

If you have an 84-87 civic then you will probably want a brown top ZC.
Doing it this way just makes it easier, but if you want you can do whatever you want.
