Yeah, the tool is supposed to fit into the center of the pilot bearing. Then you just slip the disc over that and bolt up the P.P. Maybe you can shave some off the end of the tool until it fits, just make sure the clutch disc will still be centered.

it ------- sucks doing a clutch without that tool, nothing there to keep the disk up there while you put the pressure plate on..

Do you have the universal clutch alignment tool where you can usually change the end piece to fit into the pilot hole? Or you using the one that came with the clutch which is a plastic clutch alignment tool?

You can't install it in the tranny first because the pressure plate has to be bolted to the flywheel. you need to find a way to use that tool or go buy another one. It can be done without the tool but if you don't get that clutch disc straight, the damn pilot shaft of the tranny is going to be a bitch to get ligned up.

You should make sure the the pilot bearing that you have is the right one. Slip it over the end of the input shaft of the transmission, it should fit just perfect. If it's too big, you'll end up with other problems, esspesially if you are pushing more power than stock. If the bearing doesn't support the shaft correctly, you will end up with a transhed tranny.

I have installed clutches without an alignment tool. Sometimes you get lucky and it goes right in, sometimes it's a mother ------- ---- *** bitch and you throw ---- all over the garage because you're so pissed off because you can't get the damn thing to line up.
