Valve adjustment
The "Proper way" for valve adjustment.. well I know of only the right way, I could explain it to you, but I would highly recommend getting a helms/chilton to guide you through this, if not done correctly you can easily ---- up your engine.
You are basically setting the cams in a spot where they are not putting pressure on the valve spring, and adjusting each rocker. You will use a 12/10mm wrench and a screw driver to tighten your valve lash. You will use a feeler gauge to measure how much. I cant think what exactly the a6 specs are.. but I think its something like .20mm and .25mm different for intake/exhaust sides.
The first time I ever did a set on my a6 I screwed up and my car would not run right, I had to have a guy fix them :P But that was along time ago, and its really easy to do now. Just need the right tools, and get an understanding of what you are doing.
Becareful,
Jeff

ya, Kevin has a pretty good write up on that. I would have mentioned that, but something about my java client is all fucked up everytime I view his site.
a feeler gauge can be bought at automotive stores/hardware stores.. Sears? any place that carries tools, it's basically a small piece of metal (a certian thinkness) for each, and you slide the metal under the rocker tap inbetween the top of the valve spring, and measure.
