Bad valve seals?
I BELIEVE I have bad valve seals. It smokes when I sit still for while, and when I punch it, but other than that it doesn't smoke. If it does have bad seals, how bad is that for the engine? How long should i wait before I replace them? And a dumb question I'm sure, but is it going to terribly hurt the enigne to shift bouncing of the rev limiter? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. - Matt
Bouncing off the rev limiter? Jeebus, I wouldn't suggest doing that much.
Do you keep the pedal floored when you shift? Try shifting faster?
What color is the smoke? What all is done to the car?

The car is a 90 DX hatchback, with a jerry-rigged intake, and some good wires. That's all engine wise. It's my parts getter for work, but I would like to address it's problems too. It too, one day, will be spoolin'. The smoke is blackish .... not really blue or white ..... just dark grey/blackish. I'm not bouncing, persay, but I'm keeping it up there. It's DPFI, and I have cut out a spacer under the 'throttle body' if you can call it that.

Sounds like you might be running a bit rich. Maybe your "custom" intake is giving it a bit more fuel? :P What do the plugs look like? How many miles are on the motor?

yah black smoke all low rpm but high load (ie floor it in 2nd while going 10mph) will make it run really rich and puff some black smoke. I wouldn't worry about it to much. This is a common thing with honda motors (d-series) that have higher milage and are run hard.
Rigged in the sense that I ran a piece of 2 1/2 metal pipe from the inlet on the DPFI thing, to a filter. When I bought the car, the person who had it before me molded a hood scoop on the hood. The filter sits RIGHT under the scoop. So it's getting air. I'll check the plugs when I get home. The motor has about 14x,xxx. Give or take. The cluster is from an Si, and it only says 48,xxx (said 44,xxx when I put it in). The car is Canadian, and the original cluster has 139,xxx. Thanks for the help, and keep the suggestions coming. I keep the oil in there, and I go, trust me.
Not fast, but I go non the less. Thanks. - Matt
