Making gasket, what material???
Bubble gum works well. :P Heh, I would recommend using some sheet metal like Semnos said for those gaskets. You probably don't need a downpipe gasket. The carbon buildup will probably seal it up pretty well anyway.
Or you can get actual exhaust gasket material from a gasket place. Look one up. I got about 2 sq feet for free with some other stuff I bought and it will be enough to make every gasket I need. It feels like some kind of tough plastic or something.
You wouldn't use exhaust gasket material for heat? It isn't plastic... It just feels kinda like that. It is called Thermoseal, and that is what it is designed for (unlike tin) so I imagine it will work at least as well.
Have fun compressing your tin to make it seal. I hope your flanges are perfectly flat... With all else equal, I'd prefer to use something designed to fit the purpose.

I wouldn't trust plastic, paper or any fiberous gasket material for that type of heat... Use metal like copper or a metalic mix...
