I know you all love to hear that from an opening thread from a new member!

Well heres the deal, I picked up a 89 jeep cherokee about a month 1/2 ago, 200k, bone stock.. perfect condition! It was owned by an old man on a farm that bought it new in 88 and he was probally 55-60 at the time. I noticed it sitting in front of a farm house with no tags and decided to ask him what was going on with it. Well after signing a title and handing him $100 i loaded it up on a trailer and took it home. Got it started, it ran ehhh okay, a lil sluggish. So I decided to yank the whole engine out and do a complete rebuild! ;D Of course since I'm doing the rebuild I decided to port & polish the head, open up all the intake & exhaust ports, hone up & re-ring it, and replaced any worn components, which for a Jeep 4.0 with 200k it was in remarkable condition, the old man babied it! The shop i brought the block to though it had less than 100k on it. Now, I'm pretty much done with the rebuild and as I'm putting this thing together I cant stop thinking about how cool it would be to throw a turbo on it, there is so much room in the engine bay and what the hell... I need a project! I have never done a turbo before, and since this Jeep doesnt need to be road worthy... well really ever *I do want it streetable sometime* , i fugured I might as well play. Now I might be a complet moron when it comes to turbos, but I'm a step above stupid at fabrication. So I feel confident with proper guidance I can make this work. Now that you know my story, that is if you have actually kept with it this long my questions are.....

I'm only looking to make around 7-9 psi, stock ranges, I figure anywhere from 50-75 extra HP.

What are good vehicles for me to scavenge for a turbo setup to run this? eclipse, lebaron, powerstroke, mustang ect.

Asside from Turbo, wastegate, blow-off valve what else should I really look into getting for this project. I'm going more for reliablity and daily driver as opposed to 1/4 mile monster. My wife will be driving this also with my two boys in the back.

If i'm running lower psi, do I really need a fuel managment computer? the jeep runs 19lb injectors, I do have some stock Stang 5.0 injectors that I picked up that I was going to run would this help?

What I'm looking for is making like how jeep might have done a turbo 4.0, would I need an intercooler?

I understand the logic and basic functions of a turbo, but all the small things, like the vaccum lines & oil feed n return i am at a complete loss for. If there is anyone here that has turbo'd a non HO 4.0 how did you go about it.

The manifold is pretty straight forward, it looks like I can just wrap it around the back of the oil pan and have the air charge tube run straight over the valve cover into the throttle body.

Any adivce is greatly appreciated, i enjoy learning new stuff, and considering i only have $500 into this jeep so far including the cost of the jeep and to rent the trailor I have the time and a little dough to play. I figure if I'm going to go through the pain rebuilding this engine, and i was actually peicing together a manifold back exhaust with a super 44, why not force feed it and have something with a bit of cool factor to it... Not too many Turbo'd jeep cherokees around.

it seems you got it down , maybe a side mount from a first gen mitsubishi , find some injectors from a gran national , or anything mopar , that came boosted , turbo from diesel mercedes , or turbo mustang (2.3L) or turbo coupe thunderbird,

you can take oil from the oil sensor "t" it in and just weld a bung onto the oil pan for the oil return , but keep it away from the sump, make sure the oil in faces up you get 20 degrees to play with
vaccum lines refer to the turbo to wastegate, keep it simple and run a vac line from the turbo compressor to the wastegate actuator , and "t" in to your boost gauge or not and just run a vac line straight from the intake manifold to the boost gauge , either way works

The stock injectors found in mopar 2.2T motors were 27pph and 33pph.

Being a 4.0 V6, you could easily run 15 lbs in that car, with little trouble. 2.2 chryslers ran 14-15 lbs safely without an intercooler, and with 27pph injectors. I would do yourself a favor and pick up the later 33pph injectors from a turbo 2.5 motor. Add both that and an intercooler,a nd I could see 10+ psi with no issues. The problem you will run into, is that you will run horribly rich at anything except WOT, due to the fact your car will be running on N/A fuel curves, and turbo fuel curves are completly different. Those 19lb injectors are not going to do anything for you.

With the 33pph injectors, a wideband air/fuel meter, a boost controller, and an AFPR, I could see a twin turbo setup with the stock mitsubushi turbo found on 88+ mopars, or their better Garrett T3 counterpart.
