ZC motor questions
 
I am talking about the 88-91 DOHC ZC JDM motor. They're cheap. So, these motors are D series right? Do D series trannies work with them? Do B series exhaust manifolds work with them? To convert this motor to obd1 what would you have to do? Dizzy, hydro tranny, ECU chip, any mounts to bolt it into an obd1 civic? I just wanted some general info on them, thanks.

i put a zc in my 5g hatch and it's been a pretty rough task. i got it off a guy who totalled his 5g hatch with it in. the dist. is obd1. the drivers side mound is one from hasport, i don't know what it is though. since the engine is d series, a lot of stuff bolts up. i have a 5g si tranny on now. so those mounts are all the same. the biggest problem is with management i think. power curve is much better than my cx engine but it isn't smooth and seems real high. i'm using an ls ecu since it is probably the closest bet. it's been kind of a pain in the ass. if i did it again i'd just put the z6 in instead. or maybe the torquey h22.

Yes, any D series tranny will bolt up to it. You are better off with the ZC tranny, but any tranny will work. The B series manifolds will not work. You can put B series cam gears on it with little modification. Any D series exhaust manifold will work, but some porting is needed. You don't have to, but it's a good idea because the exhaust ports are slightly offset.

They do sell OBD1 DOHC ZC motors(I just learned this a few days ago). That would probably be easier in your case. Fuel management won't be hard at all. There are plenty of ZC files floating around.

IMO I don't think it would be worth the swap in a 5gen though. A Z6 puts out the same power and is just as cheap with more parts available.

ZC is DOHC, rods are beefier than a Z6. Where did you find obd1 ZC's? How was the wiring for putting it in your 5G hatch?

Not all ZC's are DOHC. :P They even made SOHC VTEC ZC's.

I know they arent all dohc, the sohc ones are obd1 and I wouldn't have questions about those. I want the dohc obd0 one which brings problems which is why I asked questions. They are the LS motor of D series. Great links, thanks.

It looks like those ZC2's from nippon would bolt right up and be obd1, simple.

I can't find any information about the obd1 ZC, me thinks this swap is going to be a biznitch if I can't find any information about putting it into a 5g. Should I just hold out for the B?

From what I have seen, it should swap right in using your stock mounts. The only thing you might have to ---- with is the cam angle sensor, but that's cake. Are you planning on using the entire ZC setup(trans included)? If you were just using the motor you could jsut bolt it to your tranny and go. You might want to get either a custom burn on a chip or a new ECu though since your P06 is going to cut out way sooner than your ZC needs and the fuel/ignition maps are -----.

I have a chip burner so that is no problem, yeah I would just get the ZC motor. Would there be any wiring issues you think or would m DX wiring work, I have been trying to find a write up but they are all for 4g's.
