Z6 head question
 

So I picked up this D16Z6 head with 230K miles on it... and I'm trying ot figure out wheather i should rebuild it or not? Is it harder to rebuild then a bottom end? Can i just get away with a partial rebulid like replacing some valve stem seals? Or is there way more to it?

all there really is to do for a stock rebuild are seals. not real hard.


you could put some better springs and lighter retainers if you want to rev higher

but what if you need valves turned seat and yada yada yada i would take it to a shop you dont want to start out worse then you are

I did my own valve face reworking, just a little valve grind and a suction cup thingy from an auto parts store. other than that some new valve seals is prolly all it would need. If it has that many miles on it some valve guides may be a good idea, I would take it to a machine shop for the guides.

I would just do the valve seals, check the deck for flatness, and I've heard there's a paste? that you can put on the valve face and spin it into the head and it acts as a light sanding? type of ----. Never done that, just heard about it.

I think with 230k, the guides need to be replaced. Just my opinion, but ask some local Honda machine shops, maybe one will give you an opinion. You might just want to get a lower mileage head though considering z6 heads are often easy to come by in a lower mileage condition.

you could lap the valves if you want, but its probobly not needed. to find out turn the head upside down with all of the valves and springs in, but no cam or loosen the valve adjusters so all of the valves are closed. then pour some sort of thin solvent (paint thinner, acetone, MEK,ect.) in the combustion chambers. if it leaks out you know you need to lap the valves.

I suggest not using MEK unless you like you're kids to have 3 arms and 2 heads.

that small amount of MEk wont hurt anything. it is widely used where i work with no issues
