Your ideas on proper break-in....

I know theres the common argument of don't take it over 3500-4000 for 500 or so miles and then theres the guys who say go balls out on it...so whats your view? my new all motor setup was finished today and I'm about to pick the car up tonight. My thoughts is to baby it and drive "normal" for the first 500+ miles or so...any thoughts, objections?

setup: B18 w/NEW OEM PR3 pistons, 404s w/ Crower v train), p/p head, all regular bolt-ons...block was honed and the entire bottom end was freshened with new ACL bearings

let her idle for about 20 minutes, drive 'soft' for about 20 miles or so, come home make sure there's not leaks, funny noises etc. then drive it hard after that. wind out the gears a few times and let the rpm's coast down (i.e., don't go in neutral of push the clutch in, let the motor wind down). other than that, just change the oil at 100 miles, 500 miles, then 1k miles and normal oil changes after that. don't use synthetic for the first 300 miles or so. it really does no good at all to 'baby' a motor after a rebuild. everything is seated within the first 30 minutes that the engine runs, and high rpm pulls and letting the motor 'rev down' actually help the rings seal better. half the people that say all this ----- break in ----, have never even built a motor :P

I did the same as projecteg in my rebuilds and works like a charm everytime no oil buring and or useage at all what I do suggest is not to pass 7500 for the first 500 miles though make sure you don't crack a ring. although thats just why my machinist says I was hiting 8500 in the firts 15miles haha. but serisously don't rev her past 7500 for 500 mi

Idle until warm, then shut down and check for leaks.

Start back up and rev on her a little, 2-3 times lightly, 2-3 times to moderate revs, 2-3 times near redline. Between each rev listen and make sure there are no bad ticking/noises.

If everything's good so far, take her down the road and start to drive it in an increasingly aggressive manner. By the time you hit 20 miles, the engine should be broken in. Change your oil, stunna!
