y8 head swap questions
I took the y8 head off today, and will be putting it on my a6 bottom end. (mini me swap) Heres a couple questions i got.
Could i use the y8 intake manifold with the y8 head on the a6 bottom withjout switching to obd0? For activating vtec, i can use a buddy club vtec controller, correct? If you guys coule help i would appreciate it. THanks |
Re: y8 head swap questions
You don't ever switch to OBD0 to control VTEC, what have you been smoking?
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
just note that the cam timing will be off unless you know the correction method, and the head bolt nearest to the vtec soleniod is differant than the rest.
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
what is the correction method?
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
Ans i am not switching to obdo. I have an a6 motor in my car and have a spare y8 motor. So in essanse all i am doing is the mini me swap.

Re: y8 head swap questions
It's the same thing that causes half the Y8 timing homosexuality with OBD1 conversions... I talk about it in every fourthnon GD post I make, so expect no help from me either.

Re: y8 head swap questions
Hey pry just means that you have to set the timing. If i have learned the info correcty, any d series bottom will mate with any d head with the same timing.

yea, i looked at the head bolts and all look the same. I did take them out and label them just in case. But all look the same. btw, do the y8 head bolts get torqued the same as the a6 head bolts?
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
Open up a shop manual and find out.
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
is there any civic manuals for download online for the y8 motor?
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
man, you are about to be in a world of hurt if you attempt to work on your car. you need to get all the info before you start, the head bolts arent all the same when doing this swap. good luck. O0

Re: y8 head swap questions
should i use the a6 head bolts or the y8 head bolts when putting my y8 head on the a6 block?
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
Use the y6 bolts
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
Ask the magic 8 ball...it has all the answers you need ;D

Re: y8 head swap questions
i got most of the info on honda tech and some other sites. Timing wont be too bad, just gotta get the damn crank pullry off. I just have to align cam gear at tdc with the crank pully at tdc and tension it. As for the head bolts i am still unsure of. I dont know if i should use the a6 bolts or the y8 ones. The y8 fpr also will on fit on my a6 intake. So if i cannot find a z6 one to use i will pry end up swapping the y8 intake manifold. (can you even use z6 fpr's with y8 heads?)

Re: y8 head swap questions
When you say "pry" instead of probably you are a dumb ----. But you probably were a long time ago.

If you guys coule help i would appreciate it. THanks The Y8 head will fit your A6 Block. - Remember to pull the oil jet. - Have both sets of head bolts handy, and check thread engagement to determine which to use. They are different. - Your OBD0 distributor will work fine with the Y8 Head. - We used the stock A6 manifold on the Y8 head, just because it was already set up with the car and we didn't have to futz with sensors and cable fitment. You can use many different things to activate VTEC - VTEC controller - RPM switch - TurboEdit with the A/C Hack (You loose A/C to gain VTEC control) Other notes. - Have both of your water outlets handy. - Consider using ARP studs. - Use the Z6 timing belt (I think) - Use an adjustable cam gear to correct the cam angle. When VTEC activates on a MiniMe, the world pretty much stays the same. Welcome Noob, Hope that helps. Craig |
Re: y8 head swap questions
craig, to add to the head stud bolt thing, since im in a nice mood. when using 88-95 block and 96+ head all bolts are used for that block except the one nearest the vtec solenoid, that one has to be a 96+ bolt or 88-95 bolt w/ an extra washer.
|
Re: y8 head swap questions
hell yea nignogs, thats the good ----. thanks.
p.s. what about the fpr, becuase the y8 one dont bolt up to the a6 intake mani. also, why do i need to check for engagement? You mean to make sure the threads arent tweaked. (head studs) |
