my car has always run cool, takes 45minutes of idleing w/out a rad fan to over heat but that doesnt bother me so much unless there is an ill side effect i dont know about.
today my t-stat(brand new >1k miles) got stuck open so when i am driving my temp never reaches the bottom line on the gauge but i am not in cold start mode, my idle is fine ~800rpm which makes me think my engine is properly warmed up. i know the gauge works i've watched it climb when i purposely over heated it


what would cause a t-stat to stay open when its brand new and is running really cool going to hurt anything?

This is probably a dumb question, but is it an OEM t-stat or a Autozone one? Sometimes it takes 4 returns just to find a working Autozone t-stat.

well for one i wouldn't trust the gauge on the dash all too much. If you have easy access to an aftermaket one or a scan tool, you may want to play around with those and see what temps it's really achieving.

and yeah, try an oem thermostat

its from olympus (local auto place) but there stuff is usually pretty good, i'm going to acura today anyways so i might as well try one



when i let the car sit w/o the rad fan hooked up the temp goes up like it should, and when i am driving my heat is really weak because of the constant airflow accross the radiator, so that makes me believe that its at least working.


no JDM here, USDM LS FTW. i'm gonna pull it apart this morning and see if there is anythign visibly wrong with the t-stat.

is running cool gonna hurt anything?? i know when you run no t-stat you dont cool your engine effectively because the water/coolant doesnt have time to "soak" up the heat from the cylinders/head. you are just pumping cool water past the temp sensor so it re3ad cool.



on another note, my gas mileage is incredible, 230miles and still got a 1/2 tank left

changed the t-stat, the t-stat shaft was coming out of the base when it opened and when it closed it sat crooked so the plunger wouldnt seal allowing coolant to continuously flow.




and jon, the pinging in 5th gear tells me i am running really lean :P

make sure the t-stat is installed correctly ie the jiggle valve should be up, running cold will efect the hp level of the motor, heat is actually need to make power not enough and you suffer
