wheel bearing

Ok HT is gay and i should have just asked here first...

the front left wheel bearing in my 97 teg took a ----. I don't have a press, and i'm kind of lazy lately, so i was wondering if i could just swap the whole knuckle assembly from my 2000 civic. Ideas?

Re: wheel bearing

Do it without a press. Take the knuckle off, using an iron pipe that fits to the outer edge of the hub (not touching the splines) but smaller in diameter than the bearings inner race and hammer it out making sure not to damage the splines, but you dont have to worry about damaging the old bearing. If you do mess up the splines, its nothing a triangle file cant take care of. Take the c clip out of the back, hammer the old bearing out, take a wire wheel/brush, clean the inside of the knuckle, grease it lightly, put in new bearing by GENTLY hammer in new one by putting the old one over the new one and hitting the old bearings outer race, making sure ONLY the outer edge of the new bearing it toucing it or youl will fubar it. Once it seats put in c clip, gently hammer in the hub using the old bearings inner race as a support so you dont hammer the new ones inner race out of the bearing, and reinstall. It takes some time, but its not that hard. All you ahve to remeber is to be careful with the new one. Or you can take it to Napa and they press bearings if you buy them from them for relatively cheap (less than 40 bucks if i remeber correctly) Good luck if you go that route.

---- spending 40 bucks to get them pressed, i could just nig rig some sort of contraption if it came down to that. Besides i think the bearing itself is like 50 bucks. But thanks for the HMT walkthrough, sounds pretty good

Re: wheel bearing

ya but I have a feeling something would be off about doing it even though it all swaps over and the axle spline are the same.

I would just take it to the machinist and get a new one pressed on. I did it with my crx it took the car from a ragged piece of ---- that drove like ass to an almost pleasant ragged piece of ---- to drive
