Default What are my LSD options?

I'm driving an '87 Prelude, which has no aftermarket support and not much factory cross-use of parts at all. I'm gathering parts for a turbo build, but I'm really not looking forward to driving a turbo FWD car on a peg-leg.

The only choice that really seems feasible and cost-effective would be to swap to 86-89 Integra gears, including the differential - all that stuff swaps over. That way, I could use a Phantom Grip unit for that generation Integra.

I'd rather not use Phantom Grip if I don't have to. I vaguely remember reading somewhere about a company that converts stock open differentials into clutch-pack style LSDs. If so, can someone point me their direction? Or is there another choice I have?

Dig VERY deep into your pockets.

www.racegearbox.com

Ask Jamie about fitting a B16 Quaife into a Teg CG tranny.

It will NOT be cheap!

The modified OEM Diffs would be Tom Fowler at OPM Motorsports, whom Phantom SHitty Slip copied.

Your looking at $750 and your OEM diff, but it's only suggested use is autox/road course. It won't hold up to drag racing abuse.

Would the OPM diff insert hold up well enough on the street? I don't plan on drag racing anyway, so that's not a problem. My only concern is that I don't want the spider gears wearing out every 10k miles, requiring me to replace them.

why would the spider gears wear out?

have they wore out in the 20 years the car has been driven?

Well, isn't that the problem with most crappy Phantom Grip units? They put load on the face of the spider gears and over time wear them down. Some applications even require the operation of grinding the faces of the spiders down so that the PG unit has enough surface area to operate properly.

---- Phantom Grip......ok, it's not a OPM, don't even try to compare.

Now what is the question about OPM?

http://www.opmautosports.com/products/faq.html

The OPM limited-slip is a patented clutch-type custom made limited-slip differential. We start with a stock diff and remove all the gears and shafts to inspect and clean them. Then machining of the case is performed and the clutch packs are fit. The diff is then re-assembled and a spring block is pressed between the spider gears to put pressure on the side gears.
It works extremely well and has a long operation life. We have units in use in Solo, Improved Touring, Rallye, Ice Racing and high-performance street applications.

In comparison, the Quaiffe LSD is a gear-type unit. It is heavier than the OPM unit (like a heavier flywheel) and also has to re-engage if one of the wheels loses contact with the street or racing surface. The Phantom Grip LSD is an incomplete copy of an OPM unit. It has the spring block, but no clutches so it wears out the diff housing. Dollar for dollar, the OPM unit is your best bet.

Mista Bone already answered that question. $750 plus stock diff.

I think that's my choice right there. I'd prefer clutches over gear type anyway. More maintenance but I don't have ovaries, so I can do the maintenance.
