Re: what to check before replacing oil pump
Your oil pressure is dependant on the restriction put on it. Your pump could be producing enough volume but if you have a spun bearing or your bearings are the wrong size you will have low oil pressure. How many miles is on the oil pump? Have you checked clearances of the pump?

i havent done anything at all yet
plan is to test the pressure with a mechanical gauge sunday and go from there

What is the engine doing to thing you need a new oil pump. Are you burning oil? This could also indicate a spun rod bearing since an excesive amount of oil is going past the rod bearings and being flung up to the pistons past the oil rings and being burned.
