weird intermittent starting problem...????

My car is weird....on some days it starts on some days it doesn't start. Sometimes i'll be driving for 30 min or so and it just turns off on me while i'm driving. When that happens it might start again or it just cranks and cranks and nothing happens. This seems to happen more often at night or early in the morning when the weather is colder although it did happen a couple of times in the afternoon. When it doesn't start i can get it to crank and it sounds like it turns over and then dies right away.

Possible problems: i'm thinkin maybe my MSD....although i did check for spark and it did spark but still didn't start.......could it be my alternator? if thats it would my car just die while i'm driving?....fuel filter or fuel related problem?

Any other ideas? thanks

well i don't think its the main relay cause my fuel pump still makes the priming sound.....................maybe ignition switch, that sounds plausible.....how would i test the switch?

I vote on the main relay. My 92 hatch had that same problems. One day it would start normal and the next it wouldn't do anything. Just pick up a new main relay and have no worries. Their kinda pricey at like 50-60 at most auto places. I had to pick one up straight from honda cause noone else had one in stock and I was selling that car that day. ran me 58 bucks I believe.

If you don't feel like dishing out like 60 bucks on a relay just go to the junkyard and grab a couple and keep a couple in your glove compartment. I thought I didn't have to worry about the main relay since I only remembered hearing problem with them in the EF's but I got a friend at work that his hatch is doing the same thing now and he won't listen to me that it's the main relay. I could hear the pump priming and all still didn't start.

interesting........i've replaced the main relay before..............who woulda thought it'd be happening again.....is there any way to repair it? cause if i get another used main relay it'll probably mess up again in a few years?

my vote is ignition switch. main relay usually doesnt cause a stall, ignition switch overheating and shutting off will, ;D

well sometimes in the morning or late in the evening when my car is cold i'd try to start it and it'd not work.....then the next day it'd be fine....so i dont' think heat is an issue.......i read something about moisture in the distributor cap, i'm gunna check that tomorrow......i sure hope its something simple like that

not the ign switch. if it was it will crank, start, then as soon as you let go it will die. (mine had that problem).
