i got a 1996 v dubb i was on the freeway the other day and i stalled out on 1st
for the first time ever almost got hit,so the car would not start after that so my buddy pushed me and i dumped the clutch and it starts
so the manual says it could be the ignition switch,starter coil or the starter,where would sombody start?

 

I would start with testing ---- instead of just throwing random parts at it that some guy told you about on the internet.

 

try to make starter fire manually, put a screw driver across the positive and a negative, if it cranks the engine then starter is good.

 

To weld said screwdriver to the those two points?

Might be better to try using a test light on the solenoid terminal of the starter to see if the start signal is reaching the solenoid.

 

that sounds good with both points the screwdriver and test light,the one thing is they say if the cluster lights come on then it's not the ignition switch
does that sound right?

 

Not really. It is German after all, so who knows how it's wired up.

 

Hm, I had this same problem with my CRX and it was that the alternator was poo.

 

start with is the battery, is there even a charge can you turn on your lights and music? then go with does it click? is it even trying to turn over? if you can here a click but nothings happening its usually the starter. but you got to tell us what is happening. if you think its the starter take it off and get it checked at one of the auto stores. its usually pretty easy to figure out. and also it could just be a bad connection somewhere. make sure the cables going to the starter are hooked up and good.

 

Yea, don't just go throwing parts at it......try a molotov cocktail. I am not very fond of VW's

 

I have no problem with vws check the starter and the starter relay, your battery voltage and your alternater, if you cant work on vw's you fail at life.
