vw gti will only run when push started .
i got a 1996 v dubb i was on the freeway the other day and i stalled out on 1st
for the first time ever almost got hit,so the car would not start after that so my buddy pushed me and i dumped the clutch and it starts
so the manual says it could be the ignition switch, starter coil or the starter, where would sombody start?

Might be better to try using a test light on the solenoid terminal of the starter to see if the start signal is reaching the solenoid.

that sounds good with both points the screwdriver and test light, the one thing is they say if the cluster lights come on then it's not the ignition switch
does that sound right?
does that sound right?

start with is the battery, is there even a charge can you turn on your lights and music? then go with does it click? is it even trying to turn over? if you can here a click but nothings happening its usually the starter. but you got to tell us what is happening. if you think its the starter take it off and get it checked at one of the auto stores. its usually pretty easy to figure out. and also it could just be a bad connection somewhere. make sure the cables going to the starter are hooked up and good.
