vtec head swap????? help

have a 92 civic cx woth a stock 70 horses ive added a dc header a full apexi n1 exahust and an intake but still dont have the power i want, the motor only has 98000 miles on it so i dont want to do a motor swap but im looking into a d16y8 head swap ive heard good and bad things about them anyone know anything ...ive heard they have a tendency to overheat .... any other suggestions for noticable hp gains without a swap any info will help!!!

Jarz GTI 02-25-2003 09:20 AM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

i think the gain with that swap as long as its 16v.. is like 40hp or so.. but it would be well worth it.. instead of ur little ass cx intake and injectors.. youd prolly have to swap the ecu also..then you would have to hook up the vtec unless u get an ecu from a vtec and hook it up.. :) from a 92 dx vtec 1.5 would prolly work.. :) just got get the bigger intake mani too!

-dizogg on my brothers name.. :X

Re:vtec head swap????? help

I would definatly go with the head and intake swap... probably get a real good gain.

Re:vtec head swap????? help

could i just use the injectors from the y8 head >>>???

would i have to swap out the pistons too because the cx is only an 8 valve ant the new head would have 16 valves i dont know much about the piston reliefs ??????

Re:vtec head swap????? help

leave the bottom end and just swap out the entire top end. get a compete Vtec top end and and bolt it on. along with a 92-95 civic ex/si ecu

Re:vtec head swap help please!!!!!!!

what size are the y8 injectors anyone know>>>>???

also if i went with the y8 injectors and manifold would that increacs horsepower if so how much more than the stock cx injectors and throttlebody????

45psi 02-25-2003 03:21 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

i dont know the size of the injectors of the y8, and i wouldnt advise just using the injectors. you would be much more happy power wise switching the whole head. like its said above, youll get 40 some horses. 70+40=110. youll totally feel the differnce.

HMT-Admin 02-25-2003 03:56 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

I agree, just get a y8 head and intake manifold with all the ---- on it and put it on your stock block. you could easily see a 35-45hp gain.

Your engine is a 8 valve, but... read this thread..

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...;threadid=2204

I think you will be just fine..

Get the correct ECU as well. The Z6 head/intake is also an option.

The y8/z6/a6 injectors flow at 240cc

Re:vtec head swap, help please!!!!

i went to my mechanic today and he told me that for about
$1300.00 i could have a y8 head apexi v-afc vtec ecu
and my head "CHIPPED OUT" (im not 100% sure what this means but he said it would increase my fuel curve, increase my redline and give me 15-20 extra horsepower) all installed

any other info you could give would be great

anyone heard anything about mini-me's overheating???

HMT-Admin 02-25-2003 04:05 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

Your mechanic doesnt know what he is talking about, you could easily get a gain of 40hp with a stock p28 ecu. Even more if dyno tuned with a VAFC.

look at it this way..

D16y8 & D16z6 are rated at 127hp (STOCK)

Mini-me 1.5's are normally around 120-125hp (due to the high compression)

So from your stock D15b6 that is pushing 70hp right now, its going to be a huge increase.

1300 bucks? ouch, thats a bit expenisve, you could shop around and piece this all together yourself, and install it yourself for less than 400 bucks easy.

Overeheating? Nope.. not a problem at all. Just be sure to remove the oil oriface jet on the face of the block, and use a d16z6 head gasket.

Re:vtec head swap????? help

when i said 15-20 horsepower i meant just from the
CHIPPING OUT he said it would increase my fuel curve and
make my redline higher im not really sure about this process though?

any thing else i could do to the head before putting it on
htat would be worth the money?? cam ect.....??

Re:vtec head swap????? help

the motor i will be putting the vtec head on is a d15b8
sohc 8 valve 1.5l
just to let you know

thanks

Re:vtec head swap????? help

u cant put a 16v head on a 8valve block unless u happend to get one like beua or jeff did with 16v reliefs... else ur just gonna bend the valves.!!

Re:vtec head swap????? help

Hey man, for info on the oil orifice jet, check out this guy's VTEC swap. I have used it as a reference ever since I began to think about a Mini-Me on my own.

http://crx.honda-perf.org/articles/z6swap/z6swap.html

Hey I don't know much about the whole ECU situoation, so I will just make a suggestion. Won't you have to upgrade your ECU to OBDII if you use a d16y8 head and VTEC ECU? Currently you are OBDI, same as my car, and with a d16z6 you need NO conversion wiring harness -- the VTEC ECU fits right on in place of stock (the conversion harness is like an extra $100). Any thoughts, guys?

88crxSi 02-26-2003 09:12 AM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

he would still need to add the proper VTEC wires because he doesnt have a vtec engine in there right now. Unless honda made one harness for every car with all the wires with or without vtec engine, man wouldnt that be nice :)

obd1 obd2 what is the difference what is the p28

im not really clear about all of the ecu's and wiring??

OnYx 02-27-2003 06:30 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

OBD 1 is easier to work with than OBD 2. OBD1 has less connections. A P28 is an OBD 1/ OBD2 SOHC VTEC ECU. Most P28 ECU's are 92-95. There are some not many P28 OBD 2 ECU (96-98), most of the time is P2P.

the tranny doesnt affect actual power. It just affects how the power is used. You will still gain HP with your stock tranny, but with a different tranny it will have more acceleration because of the different gear ratios

Re:vtec head swap????? help

is it really worth the time and trouble for a lousy sohc head??

again pardon my ignorance i am b18b crazy.

swap in a 92 thru 95 ls motor. can be done for 1800 with mounts, just use the ls ecu.

130hp and more torque and a better power plant than any sohc vtec.

did i mention?
less wiring?? ;D

Re:vtec head swap????? help

92 - 95 LS motor? lol, you mean a 90 - 93 or 94+ ??? 92 - 95 is a 2g and 3g integra

HMT-Admin 03-08-2003 06:07 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

92-95's are OBD1 B18's that are plug and play on a EG Civic.

90-91's are OBD0

88crxSi 03-09-2003 02:02 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

well well, didnt know the 2g integra had two different OBD types... 90 and 91 are OBD0 and 92 and 93 are OBD1 ?

HMT-Admin 03-09-2003 03:34 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

yup, then after 95 they went to OBD2

Re:vtec head swap????? help

ok...for the valve reliefs.....i've always had a prob with the cx(92-95) cause it does only have 8 reliefs. but any of the earlier 1.5's have all 16 reliefs. you Can put the z6 head on it but you'll have valves tapping like crazy. I know that for a fact. and the y8 question.....you dont have change to obd2 if you put a y8 head on. come on guys...do your research. it just like...if i put a ctr mtor in my eg hatch....i dont have to change it to obd2...all i have to do is not use some of the plugs for the obd2 and use the only ones necessary for the swap. and to make it easier....you can use the b16...pr3 i believe....for the 88-91 sohc to vtec head swap.........its gonna use more fuel but you can adjust it later for more power....and all you do is use a knock sensor on the back and ground it........or just chip the ecu for no knock sensor like the "real" mugen programs.

92civichb 03-10-2003 11:41 AM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

are you sur the cx only has 8 valve reliefs i mean why would honda make an othe set of pistons for 1 car its just not practical??? its the only 8 valve after 92

if it did and i put the y8 head on it wouldnt the valves shatter??

88crxSi 03-10-2003 01:18 PM

Re:vtec head swap????? help

if there are only 8 valves and u put a piston w/ 16v you lose compression ;) thats why ...

and yes, if u have 8 valve reliefs in the pistons and u put a head on that has 16valves u will have 8 bent valves ;)

Find a new mechanic. It sounds like this guy is just blowing smoke up your ass. I have never heard of "chipping" a head and I don't think it is possible for an increased redline by "chipping" a head. He is probably talking about porting it and that will not change your redline. I would not expect any desirable increases in horsepower from it. Maybe 5 if you are lucky. And $1300????? Swap a new motor in it if you are going to spend money like that on it!!!! You could find a D16 for well under $1300 and work circles around your 70 hp motor. Just my two cents.
