Default VSS code! I cant fix it.

So my speedometer quit working a while ago and I was told that the VSS might be out. Also checked the engine light. VSS. Okay so lets see here. I replace the VSS with a brand new one. Still throws the code. So I thing hey maybe it is the gauge cluster. So I replace it. Nope, still there. So I repeat these steps. (VSS, Gauge cluster) Guess what it is still on. I would even car if the car would engage vtec but it wont even do that it just runs in limp mode. The only other thing I can think of is that the plug for the VSS might be bad Has anyone ever had or heard of this before?

Thanks

clean the plug, cures 99.44% of the VSS issues.......

Also make sure when you swapped the VSS, you didn't leave the white insert and thus try to double them up.

Yeah, this is common knowledge from 1997.........

Is your VSS Electronic or Cable? If it's Electronic do what MistaBone said, if it's cable, make sure the cable isn't broken.

The VSS is electronic. Thanks for the suggestions, I will have to check that. I have never had a problem with the VSS before. It all started when I swaped out my tranny and put in a new clutch and flywheel. I swaped in the Y21 JDM LSD tranny. Then it all started.

Did you reuse your old VSS?

Yes I reused the old VSS. I am thinking that it is electrical though. They guy who had the car before me had a GSR cluster in there and I am thinking that he might have choped the wrong wire. But I dont think that that would throw the check engine light. I am lost. Where can I buy a new VSS. I just want my check engine light off and my speedo to work.

I would check the continuity (sp?) of the wires.

Did you put the little pin back in when you replaced the VSS. It is the little plug that turns the sensor. That could be easy to lose/forget.

Does the car have abs? Is there a donut on one of the drive hubs? Just a random thought.
