Default vehicle speed sensor problem?

I recently had my friend's mechanic install a new clutch in my GSR tranny. I have a 95 civic coupe and although the car runs great with the new clutch, there is one problem, my speedometer is not working now and everynow-and-then the check engine light goes on. I thought maybe the vehicle speed sensor was left disconnected but it is on. The mechanic claims that the connection for the sensor is rusty and that it's not making contact. However it was working before he changed the clutch. I plan to replace the VSS and see if that works and also check the wires leadind to the sensor. Any clues as to what else could've failed? Any help is highly appreciated.

I'd double check the elec connection, maybe be pulled a wire loose when installing the new clutch.
