So I have to replace a third gear snycro on account of when I first started racing I tended to miss it....often. So besides that, I began to wonder about replacing the 5th gear in my tranny with like a DX overdrive that way I could get better gas mileage rather than the shorter EX overdrive I have now. THEN, I thought a little deeper into it and has anyone ever swapped over say a 3rd gear in an LS as the 4th gear in an EX tranny?

B's and D's don't mix, like putting a 75mm piston in a 81mm hole.

DX and EX 5th are the same.

If your HAVE to replace your synchro, 3rd gear is fucked also, thats another $250.

The grinding noise you are hearing is steel on steel, the sleeve onto the dog teeth on the gear.

 

Thanks, but I don't think the gear is bad yet. It has trouble getting into gear from downshifting (rev up to the RPM and wiggle a little) so that's why I think it's a syncro. I don't beat on it so I'm thinking that the gear is still okay.

how do syncros not grind?? they are a rotating moving part inside that meshes gears together right?? i dont see how they could not get fucked up when most of the trannys ive taken apart looks like the syncros were stripped to death.

 

thats from the DRIVER forcing the the ring into the synchro teeth and MASHING them, force it hard enough, the synchro will bite into the gear but it will align and then you grind the dog teeth. That is mainly a B series issue, not a D series problem.

I estimate I've worked on 100+ D series trannys, I've only replaced 3 synchros, they were all from MY personally driving.



Exploded shifter fork tip got into second gear, wiped out 2/3's of the teeth and busted the blocker ring, locking the tranny in second gear. That was my first EX tranny with about 700 1/4 mile passes on it and two season of autox. I replaced the 3-4 synchro as well. Not because the teeth were worn, but the forcing cone had worn enough that they were out of spec.
