timing belt issues x1000000
 

first t-belt: lasted maybe 100miles after it shredded it self to a point of almost snapping. took everything off but couldnt find anything that looked like it would make cuts of that kind to the belt. i mean, all the plastic pieces and everything looked "normal." this was a toda belt.


second belt: oem honda belt, lasted 4-5 days before it loosened it self and bent 7 exhaust valves and broke the 8th.




wtf is the deal here ? everything was nice and tight, new tensioner, new everything really.

b17 block/head with p73 pistons skunk2 cams/valves/valve train/cam gears.

wish it was that easy. i have the 22 teeth pump and the right belt. i asked the parts guy at least 3 times. lol

do you spin the crank a bit to tighten the belt before you tighten the tensioner?
is this your first belt?

no, i set the crank to TDC and i dont do anything else with it.

the way i do it is like this, set the crank to TDC, then run the belt around ending with turning the intake cam(w/o the belt on) a little to line up the marks. after that i pull up on the tensioner to get the belt tight and finally tighten the bolt. i've done it like this on a few cars and none have ever had a problem.


am i doing something wrong ? this will take a good chunk out of my budget to fix. :l

you gotta put the belt on
set it to tdc
counterclock spin the crank bolt until the belt gets tight (go slow because if you do it fast it gets loose again)
then when its tight you tighten the tensioner bolt
give it a few spins to check for tighteness and your good to go

it basically tightens itself when you spin the crank and the tensioner bolt is loose

if you dont understand what i am saying download a manual from the tech section

im sure there is a few ways to get the belt on with the end result being the same.


what i dont understand is why it would work fine for an X amount of days and then all of a sudden loosen and ---- almost everything up.

maybe it is that little spacer/washer that goes on the crank gear in front of the belt and behind the pulley is not there or maybe the tensioner is bad or maybe you fucked tensioning the system.

That may be true but maybe your way doesnt work well. Check the cam gear/s for spinning true, crank too. Maybe you are making it too tight.
