Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

Anyone who's actually seen one installed, or has pics? I know there is some talent on the part of the fabricator involved, but I'd like to get an idea how well the main hoop is bent, etc.

JD, on www.ohiohondas.com a boardmember was working with Jegs to do the cages.

I've never seen one though, but he was a redneck like us.

Dunno if the guy moved to/from slowmotion motorsports

Of course I could be drunk and don't have a clue.......well, not yet!

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

Sweet!

I asked Fatass, and he said they fit poorly, but, well, that's what Fatass knows. I know there's a lot to the install, and was mainly concerned with how well bent the main hoop is - if there's extra length, the rest of it can be fudged as needed.

1" gap around B-pillar, comments? I'm really a cage n00b... all my friends keep talking about them, several 400 + whp cars, nobody has one. :l

BTW, E85 looks like a winner. Take Dave's beer away from him; he's too skinny to be trying to hold his own against you. ;)

Yeah, notice they don't have anything for 88-91 hatches? I also don't like the faggot-y bends to clear the dash in the demo picture. Through dash, please. :-\

Ah, that's better.

What Art Morrison calls an 8 pt cage with one swing up door bar is what I'm looking for. Shame shipping from WA would suck Stevemode's dick. :(

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

Most of the stuff that needs to be notched already is, the ends that need cut are at an angle (chop saw or sawzall work) so you can mate them with the floor pads. If you need to ghetto notch something, a grinder works wonders.

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

sweet, wonder if they sell seperate parts. my car already has the main hoop and rear bars going back, so i only need the diagnals in the hoop and the cross bar.

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

Well, if they don't want to sell seperate, you can always tell them you put on your robe and wizard hat...

:)

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

One inch gap around the pillars is nothing. Don't worry about that at all. If you having some free time and like to weld, take some flat stock and weld strips from the hoops to the a and b pillar. This is very strong and will help the hoops from coming out the bottom of the car. This will be a "point" for the rules if you have a max limit on amount of points.

Speaking of cages attachment points. Flat plates on the bottom of the cage is stupid. Your club may have limits to how big the plates are, mearsured in square inches. Form a "rocker box". Use every bit you can.. It should have a base and two vertical plates. This will help things out a ton in strengh.

E85 sucks ass!!! It has a few problems. First of the gas changes session to session and even week to week. So you should tune your car with every tank because you wouldn't know what the hell you got that tank. It doesn't keep long either. Eats fuel cell foam also. Buy race gas and be done with it.

Randy
PS cage kits most of the time suck!!!

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

Sweet, I appreciate your $0.02, you fabricate a bit more than the average smurf.

Do you have any pics or links to good writeups about installs, and more details about rocker boxes? I don't have a firm visual in my mind.

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

I will dig some stuff up. BTW the material that Jegs uses is way to heavy duty. 1.75 inch .134 wall DOM is heavier then ----. A 12 point will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 300-350 pounds. 100 pounds too heavy!!!. I am a huge fan of DOM steel for the average racer and even some pro stuff, check your rules and use that as a guide line. Chrome-moly looks good on paper for weight and strengh but looks very bad after the "big one".

I'll be back

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

This is a very good article on how to build a good cage in a CRX. There are some things kinda wrong that I see, but it's easy to look at someone elses work and find problems. But overall a very safe, strong cage, I would crash it :P

I love old CRXs, I will own one again someday. It won't be that clean, though, it'll be a nasty slut of a ride.

Sure! While you're at it, ask him if he can garage store it for me a couple years for me, while I'm in school, until I can afford it.

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

I have raped my little 84 crx. It started life as a rusty car that a very cool guy owned sence new. He bought it in CA back in 84 and then brought it up to MN in the mid 90s. He preformed a mid life resto, new shocks, rebuilt the motor, put some pretty trick ---- on it. Then I got it for 300 bucks. It got a weekend cage, and raced hard for now 3 years. It is 1834 pounds with my fat 190 pound ass in there. When I go racing I laugh because people spend a ton of money trying to keep up to this 24 year old car. It is way too easy to drive. And as you guys know it's easy to make power with a honda motor.

This was my first honda and will be my last, but god damn what a great little car.

Randy
PS first race is next weekend. :y

When I undergo toxic shock syndrome from leaving my tampon in too long I am known for verbally dragging people over coals. What you got was a cheery bit of sarcasm meant to be laughed at.

I have the Art Morrison cage in my EG hatch. It's a 6 point and wi want that bad to install. CAme with welding plates for the floor board and bottom plates for the bolts to go through. But if you daily drive it does get to be a pain in the ass to craw over the door guards. I welded everything and even bolted them down. The cage does like to vibrate and I put mine right up to the roof line with the overhead hoop and thats what vibrates. If your skilled I suggest putting ice on the roof and tack along the metal structure that the head liner mounts to. It's thin but only 4 tacks should reduce the vibration. Cage costed $650 shipped. And the chrome molly isnt worth the extra 300 get the steel.

i've seen a lot of VW guys box in their rear strut towers and attach to that. seems like it would be a lot more structurally sound that way.

wouldn't some of the roll bar pads fix that?

On the subject of that CRX buildup...

What did you do about the steering? I just mounted my seat in my civic and I need like 6-8" added to my steering column to get thewheel where I want it.

cardinal811 01-11-2007 04:29 AM

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

Sure the padding would help put alot, but that was my first cage install and I thought the closer to the chassis the better, but I have to deal with the humming until I get some ordered, but it was a drag only car I thought at the time and with solid mounts I didnt think it would matter. But it would quite it down alot in the cabin.

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

The only way of adding lengh to a steering shaft is to build your own. It's a huge pain in the ass but it's the only way of doing it right.

Randy

krustindumm 01-13-2007 01:04 PM

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

---- that, if no-one makes a longer shaft, then I'll try to use a standard shaft for a stock car and have an adaptor machined to fit the Honda U-joint on the end.

Tom-Guy 01-13-2007 05:46 PM

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

---- machined, weld.

iceracercrx 01-13-2007 10:23 PM

Re: Are these ghetto cheap cages, or ghetto and cheap cages?

Weld on a steering shaft??? Maybe not a good idea. You can make a shaft and adapt it to a Honda for about 75 bucks. They aren't that trick.
