Swappin' D's

Hey guys I was planin' on doin' a mini me to my d16y7, but decided not to instead I'm swappin' the whole motor. The only reason for that is because all the research I did no metion anything about the oil, and how the vtec is gonna recieve it. plus the junkyard wanted 300. for the whole head, and 600 for the whole engine w/ wire harness.
Now my question is since I'm swappin' the whole motor, and wire harness, if I pick up the correct vtec ecu for 96+ years can I just plug it in, and ride??????

what car. If you're gonna run a vtec motor it's best to have a vtec harness that way you don't have to wire it. Hence you'll want to get a d16y8 harness out of an ex, then it all should plug in. You are going to be getting a y8 right?

it's a 96dx, I'm swappin' out the Y7, and replacin' it with the Y8, and the engine is comin' with the wire harness but not the ecu. My ? is if I buy the ex ecu it should play with no problems correct???

I'm pretty sure you're still going to have to run the wires for the vtec solenoid and oil pressure switch to the ecu, and more than likely the stock ecu plugs aren't pinned for vtec or the switch. I'd de-pin a couple of spots off the ex plugs just in case you need to add them to your harness.

so u replaced ur healthy y7 with a y8?
are u on crack?
the is nothing to do for the oil to activate VTEC on y blocks. you just wire it in so you could of just slapped on a y8 head and have basically a y8 motor with slight better compression

Ravage70 please read, before you drop your 2 cents... their hasn't been anything done. right now I"m in the gathering info stage. and people are helping but i have no ideal on your plans.. anyways to my friends out there why would i have to rewire anything if i'm taking the complete engine along with the wire harness along with the ecu.. would i be better off just doin' a mini??

dont buy a head from a junk yard....if they are really charging you 300 dollars tell them to ---- off..i bought a built z6 head ported valve job with comp cam and parts for almost 300 it can rev to 9500 :6

Re: Swappin' D's

300 is outrageous...i bought a y8 head for 150 from a reputible shop

Why would you want to go through the hassle of pulling out your dash to replace the harness that connects to the ecu when you can just run a few extra wires? Even if you get the y8 harness to plug into the connector at the firewall, you still might have to run those wires for vtec. Best bet to see if you actually have the wires in your ecu plugs, go to the Apexi website and check out their vafc wiring diagrams...it'll tell you exactly where the vtec wires should be, then cross reference it to your ecu plugs and see if it's there.

Re: Swappin' D's

I just did a swap in my sisters 98 EX. Both ECU's (P2P and P2E) will run the car. I was doing the opposite of what u were doing... from a y8 to a y7. All i did was remove the ECU harness and ECU along with the y8 and left the harness on the motor that was going in, and it all went in perfect. If you are pulling the whole motor out, just to make life easier, do not remove the wire harness from either engine. Then the swap is very easy.
