surging idle help!!!

ever since i got my b16a in my atchback its had a idle problem ..the idle will surge from about 1000-1300 and keeps going on like at stop lights and when my car is just ideling i was told that it was because i was using a single wire o2 sensor so i bought a 4 wire heated and put it on and it still does it .....mabye a vacuum leak????

any help would be appreciated

Re:surging idle help!!!

i have a b16a1 in my crx and when i hooked up all the vacuum lines i didnt do so correctly and my idle surged like what yours is doing check the diagrams to make sure every sensor is hooked up correctly and check for leaks

Re:surging idle help!!!

Also check your fast idle valve on the back(I think) of the intake manifold. That's a common problem.

This might help.
Components might be in different spots on your 92, but its all relative.

Re:surging idle help!!!

i had the same problem once with a crv motor into a crx....it turned out to be a vacuum leak....we sprayed starting fluid over all the vacuum lines and found out which one it was...so we changed it and it never surged again...and just like ur problem it was from 1k to 3k rpms...wierd but it could also be other things too..

Re:surging idle help!!!

starting fluid? i assume the idle changes when you've sprayed the correct one?

Re:surging idle help!!!

so i should just spray some fluid over the hoses behind the motor and check for bubbles on the hoses is there anything i could use besides starting fluid???

thanks

Re:surging idle help!!!

flush your radiator and check coolant lines & hoses... sounds simple/silly, but this has been known to be the cause of an eratic idle

Re:surging idle help!!!

the rad has plenty of coolant and is doesnt use much at all ....still think it could be a prob>>>>????

Re:surging idle help!!!

think it could be an idle air control valve??

Re:surging idle help!!!

if it surges up. like its normal then goes up try to burp your coolant system. the IACV wont make an idle go up, but the FIAV (fast idle air valve) will. The FIAV detects how hot the coolant is (coolant runs to this and out the other side, check on back of intake manifold) and then it adjust the amount of air goin in. If there is an air bubble it will think its cold and bump up the idle, when the bubble passes it will go back down. Same thing can happen if it needs to be cleaned out.

Re:surging idle help!!!

Sounds like the O2 sensor to me. Run the single wire O2 sensor (If thats what was on it) but get one that you know works.(borrow one from a friends car if you can)

Re:surging idle help!!!

ive ran both o2 sensors and it still surged so illl try to bleed the coolant tomm

Re:surging idle help!!!

well i went to burp the coolant but i noticed that i was leaking coolant out of the hose that goes into my firewall im pretty sure that its for my heater because whenever i have my heat on i notice a little coolant around the hose....so i didnt burp the coolant because i wasnt sure if this has anything to do with it....any thoughts??

Re:surging idle help!!!

when you turn your heater on do you smell coolant in the car? if not, just keep an eye on the levels.

But.. again if you have a surging idle. And air in the coolant IS causing this that may be where the air is getting in..

how much fluid? like a drop?

92civichb 06-04-2003 12:23 AM

Re:surging idle help!!!

yeah depending on how long i have it on

a couple of minutes is only a couple of drops

....i dont smell any coolant

u think this is my problem??

anyone??

Re:surging idle help!!!

dude check your vacuum hoses, bleed the coolant system, clean and readjust the iacv and fiv if you have em. also check the pcv valve. you should have a manual to consult with, if not you can find instructions and even a download of the 92-93 b18a helms in my sig at www.g2ic.com/forums

Re:surging idle help!!!

havin this problem after I put in a new radiator. HOw do I burp the system?

XDEep 06-06-2003 11:05 PM

Re:surging idle help!!!

you basically turn that nut with the hole in the center until the coolant comes out in a steady stream. its to the left of the exhaust manifold. check the manual for the exact procedure.
