stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
i stripped a bolt on the dizzy, a nut on the oil pickup, and somewhere else but i forgot where.. anyone have any tips for gettin em out with a bare ------ minimum of tools? i got random sockets layin around the garage.. gettin a new set tomorrow.. any other reccomended buys for semi cheap while im at it?
btw what gaskets are needed to replace i bought a water and oil pump, those came with gaskets.. so all i should need is a HG, intake, exhaust, oil pickup and ???? thanks for the input.. pics will be up in a seperate thread later with progress on my first honda build ;D |
Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
oil pickup doesn't have a gasket. there isnt much danger in the oil leaking into the oil.
the stripped nut is no biggie, spin the stud out and replace it. the dizzy bolt...if its the top one you can replace the cam cap. otherwise run 2 dizzy bolts no big deal. |

Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
sounds good :)
i also need to change the cam gear over.. is there any way to line it up properly so my timeing wont be off or is there a groove for it to fit in? i havent gotten quite that far yet, my head is still at the machine shop |

Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
well, the oil pickup has an oring that should be replaced. if it goes bad the pump will suck air instead of oil. also, the cam gear, as long as its going back on the same style head cam etc. it wont need lined up. set the timing marks if there is not belt on it, and put the gear on aligning it w/ the key *only 1 way it can go on*.

i have a downloaded manual somewhere but i have to find it first.. i'll worry about finding it after the tear down, got pretty far in just three hours considering its my first one and i took several breaks since it was almost 100 degrees :l |
Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
my z6 had a gasket that went between the oil pickup and the oil pump. I didnt replace it the first time i rebuilt the engine and oil pressure was pretty low. Gauge read 0 at idle but the light didnt come on.

Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
it wasnt really an option for me either.... i think it may be why i had a little spun bearing carnage after two months or so. With the new pickup AND gasket, i have 10psi at idle.
|
Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
10psi oil pressure at idle is pretty crappy
|
Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
Yeah ---- I get almost 65psi on cold startup and 40 or so when fully warmed up
I also didnt use a gasket on the oil pickup, just made it very clean Stripped bolts arent ----, put them vice grips on tight! dont be a vagina Oh and get a good set of sockets, if your disassembling something and you dont have the right socket, DONT ------- TRY IT, get the right socket |

Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
I didnt read the rest of the thread but you have a few options,
1) soak the $hit out of the bolt with wd40 or another nut buster, then get some good vice grips, "hulk up" and turn green and give it your best clamp. 2) Weld the closest fitting socket on real well and then put the ratchet on there and break it lose. 3) get a bolt remover kit from pep boys and follow the directions. 4) get a drill or grinder and go to town on whatever if left of the bolt. good luck |

Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
well i went tool hunting and ended up spending $400 :l i need to stay out of stores if i want this damn build done... lol, i'll post up pics in a few ;D i got a craftsmen bolt out set for the stripped nuts and bolts which should work better then the vice grips.. but i can always resort back to them if needed :y

Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
I lied. As I assembled my LS block tonight I noticed that the oil pickup has a gasket on it, woopsie.
|
Re: stripped bolts during tear down, FUCK
yeah i noticed that the goober who put this motor together last time used permatex gasket maker for almost every ------- part on this motor minus the HG
im disgustid :l got the bolts out though... now i stripped a bolt on the flywheel and cant get the bolt out kit to grab.. any ideas? if i cant figure it out by tomorrow i'll just have the machine shop do it |
