spun bearing... last how long?

so i spun a rod bearing
i think it happened a while back and just been slowly getting worse
i can faintly hear it in the car now
but when im under the hood i can hear it with a little reving
when i pulled the 2nd spark plug wire it seamed to go away

i was wondering how long it will last
can i use the car to get to school on monday maybe more about 30km each way
im going to transfer my insurance asap

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

just drive around without the #2 plug wire on, it might help it last a little longer :1

There's no telling, sometimes they last a couple days. Most seem to destructo within minutes.

My celica lasted months with no oil pressure. it was amazing.

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

Hondas aren't Toyotas. Toyotas don't have oil pressure.

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

My brothers GTiR lasted about two days .. I know its not a Honda I'd say not very long.
Hate ------- spun bearings :7

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

Yeah ---- that. mine was kind of noisy at first but day 2 when i started it it was much louder. i parked mine while i still had a block with no holes in it to rebuild.

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

I think mine lasted about a month and I still beat the ---- out of it. Near the end it got worse VERY fast. In the course of about 15 minutes it went from making a little noise to seising right up. I had it floored and it still couldn't stay running in neutral.

Sounds like you DIDN'T have a D16Y7/8.

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

well i think iv been driving like this for a month now
last week when i did a long pull up a big hill it started being noticeable under the hood
now its noticeable in the car but only when i really listen for it
im going to try to make it to school tomorrow and i guess if it gets worse ill take off the spark plug wire

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

Yeah seeing things like this lead me to believe that my h23 did NOT have spun bearings, but that's what everyone is telling me. Mine's lasted for 2 months or so and I've drove the ever living dog ---- out of it since. But now it's disassembled, never did completely blow up on me.

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

Mine started to knock after some rippers. Drive home the car was knocking like the police on a black man's door.

Circa 1998 d16z6 in a 1990 hatch was pretty ballzy shot back then

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

depends how high you rev the engine. mine lasted about 5mins after it started knocking because i kept WOT redlining it

Atticus 11-25-2007 06:31 PM

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

im starting to think maybe it matters how much you spin it or how much you damage it
cuz i heard a difference in my det can like a month ago and now only after doing full 7500 4th gear pulls up a big hill i can hear it under the hood
oh well if it gets me to school ill be happy
ill replace it with a bearing out my other engine in the spring
it should last long enough for me to learn how to tune ;D

J-SMITH69 11-25-2007 06:46 PM

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

you won't be able to just throw a bearing in it, especially if you keep driving it

Atticus 11-25-2007 08:24 PM

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

well im going to try any ways
my buddy did it and he said it lasted like 6 months
since i got a spare sitting on the floor thats good enough for me

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

i have a friend who clocked 26k miles on a spun bearing in a 4wd abused toyota, v6. depends on which half of the bearing spun, rod or crank?

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

honda=rod

Honduhs eat thrusts and mains if the block is warped.

Was a d16y7 in a 96 civic cx hatch.

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

either way if you drive it like that you have a greater chance of ruining the crank, rod, or even the block if its a main bearing.

I put a d16y5 oil pump in my y7, i dont know if the shitty 96+ d's have a weakness in the crank oil holes or the pump but the more expensive "high performance" oil pump i purchased turned out to have a y5 part number.

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

Any tapping at all = damaged crank.

Atticus 11-27-2007 02:23 AM

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

ya i got the bitch to give me a ride to school and a buddy home
probably not going to start the car till like spring
other then disconnecting the battery you guys have any good storage ideas for the winter
its in a under ground parking lot

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

If its knocking BAD then the crank will be fucked. but if its knocking faintly you can throw in a new or even used bearing and itll last. I polished my crank and threw in a used bearing and the engine lasted me a while. I used the old rod. I did it cuz I wanted to see if it woudl last and I didnt feel like pulling the tranny to change the crank. It ran well but spun it again.

Tom-Guy 11-29-2007 12:09 PM

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

You get 7-10k cheesing in a bearing like that, unless the crank is really heat scarred.

even if i get 2k ill be happy
it will be enough to learn/get a new tune going

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

knock knock

throw the crank in the trash

Or dont listen waste your time and money

storage ideas um windows up. My old civic sat around for almost 18 months before I worked on it again. New motor. Fresh fluids. Old tank of gas

Rapped the rev limiter for a good 10 minutes
fix a leak stuff clogged raditor after rapping blowing off a hose spraying sparkles all of my mad jdm motor

New hose

went rapping again

threw a rod 2 weeks later

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

i have another engine im going to build
im going to check the crank first but the only thing that will cost me is time and oil

Econo-Box 11-29-2007 11:48 PM

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

Yeah I found a crank kit for cheap so 250 bucks later im gonna get my ---- back up as well. I couldnt find a god damn D anything around ehre that had less than 70k miles on it.

T0DA 11-29-2007 11:54 PM

Re: spun bearing... last how long?

Mine was taken apart today, my main journals on the crank are nice and scarred. :l
My oil light problem/oil pressure problem/knock was because an oil supply line going to the crank that keeps oil pressure up cracked, thus causing all this carnage. I'm not exactly sure how the ---- something like that cracks but whatever.
