sohc vtec overrated?
hey, so right now i have a pretty much stock d16y7, my plans were to mini-me it and turbo it. BUT i was talkin to this guy who also turboed his d16y7 and we ended up talkin about the vtec. i know this guy on this other forum i go on who runs the 14b on his mini-me d and he is pullin like right around 200whp, the vtec gave him 20hp. im contemplating whether or not its worth it to do the mini-me for 20 horses? im not tryin to make my car a sleeper, but just quick enough to have some fun. what do you guys think?

vtec not ness. give u 20 horse but it gives you a wider power band.

either one works in my opinion. y7 manifolds suck once you get a nice mani/tb they really open up

yeah, i was thinkin better cam, of course rods and pistons. then just slap a turbo. i was thinkin about gettin one from this site called turbocalculator.com they are remanufactured turbochargers at ok prices. then ill just get the junkyard ic. smic or fmic whatever i can find in good condition.

I would get a sohc vtec z6 manifold or y8 manifold ported w/ a big bore throttle body while your adding the cam. I offer these services and have them in stock :)

well then how convenient ::laughs evily:: j/k but yea im kinda out of a job right now. but when i get one, how much would you charge me for the z6 mani? (and correct me if im wrong, but the z6 does allow more air flow correct?)

If i remember right, the y8 intake manifold is bigger than the z6 one. I have a z6 in my rex, and the intake from an a6 looks bigger. The y8 is the way to go if you want a bigger manifold.

its a situation of a 6 of 1 half dozen of the other kinda thing, either one will work great over any other factory D series IM so my suggestion is to use whichever you can get cheaper |

This is a hard choice...
if it is your first setup...I would just run a different intake manifold and then boost it with the nonvtec head. Less issues to deal with as far as tuning, wiring,etc. If you're looking to make the most power out of your d series then I'd run the vtec head. You will make that hp # that much easier. it is to my understanding that IN STOCK FORM, the z6 head flows the best, while the y8 intake manifold is the best....the setup that i'll be running here shortly in my daily driver crx will be: a6 block w/ z6 pistions(i busted all of the ringlands in my a6) Z6 head p&p y8 intake manifold ported either a ls or gsr throttle body (i have both i just need to get a micrometer to measure to make sure they are both 58mm or which is bigger ;) ) 60/48 t3 arp head studs should be a decent sohc setup imo... nothing like the ls/vtec though. anyways i hope my post helped even thought i blabbed on for a while |

man everyone says one is better than the other and you will get x ammount of power from each, but ---- man, you could have one tiny issue in anything you buy to make much more of a difference than the different manifold......like tuning or many other things

slap any stock mpfi manifold besides the y7 manifold on a stock y7 watch it jump up 6-8 whp acrodd the powerband that is a stock manifold. y7 manifold is junk and it will need to be replaced

Stock for Stock I feel that the Z6 motor are the fastest, but a ported and polished non Vtec head with 3 or 5 angle cut seats is gonna be better than a stok Vtec head. There is a lot of power to be release front any Honda motor, SOHC or DOHC.
