smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/SPARK PLUG PICS***

so i bought my brothers integra that had some problems. first it was the clutch now a new clutch is on the way. now i find out that it smokes when you gun it. im sure its after 5k to 7k. i thought it could be the rings?? but then i got to thinking and maybe its the valve stem seals or something with the head. i figure it might not be worth it to take the head apart and replace the valve stem seals and just go ls/vtec. what do you guys think? how do i figure out if its the head or the rings without taking ---- apart. im too fucken lazy :-X. can i do a compression test to see if its the rings

Usually if it's the valve stem seals you'll notice some puffs of bluish smoke after decelerating in gear, where your vacuum is high. Then as soon as you give it some gas you'll see the smoke out the rear. Another way to see if it's the dseals or guides leaking is to remove the exhaust manifold/header and look at the valves for any oily moisture. thats a good sign that the seals are allowing oil to pass through.
I recently sent my head out to a machine shop because I had replaced my valve seals and it was still smoking. I gave it to them to change the guides too but they found small cracks in the combustion chambers and said the head is junk. That could be the reason for my smoking. But, it's a possibility fo others as well. Definately check out the compression and see where your standing.

Re: smoking n/a b18a

yeah im probably gonna check the compression on monday to see where its at. ill post the results in a few days. i hope its the valve stem seals. haha i really dont feel like rebuilding the motor right now. id rather just swap in a vtec head and be done with it.

Re: smoking n/a b18a

okay so i went to do a compression test today at my buddy house. and it didnt come out as good as i thought. is there any way valve lash could cause it to be this way? ehh i guess the rings are toast. when i put oil in number 2 . the numbers went up to 200. did i do this wrong? pulled all the plugs out. pulled the ecu fuse. did it at WOT :'(

i dont have any stinkin cash for that right now. hahaha. im thinkin of just a rebuild. new rings and rod bearings. i've never rebuilt a motor before. ----!!! steve help a nigga out ;D

I'll help you, but I'm not driving out to wherever your car is. The best bet is to buy another ls block and we'll do a rebuild on that. ;)

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/COMPRESSION NUMBERS***

haha the car still runs...i drive this ---- everyday. how long do you think it'll take to rebuild this bitch. im looking to get it done in a weekend. as far as rod bearings go i wonder if i should wait to buy those till i tear(sp?) block apart to order the right ones. or do you just want me to buy another ls block so i can donate one to you ;)

MikeJ-2009 05-23-2005 02:25 AM

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/COMPRESSION NUMBERS***

With the new rings on hand, and my trusty spring hone, it could be done, but that's going to require probably the whole weekend non stop. Or you could just bring the block to me and I'll have it done in 2 hours. ;D

Leave the block assembled until you bring it though.

just pop the head off, drop the oil pan, pop the pistons/rods out from the top, throw a little hone in the cylinders, throw some new rings on the pistons, and slap them back in there. if you have everything you needj on hand and don't have to go searching/waiting for ----, it shouldn't take more than about 5-6 hours.

what about the rod bearings? should i just buy acl's or wait to see which ones are in there and get them from acura? :-\

why do you need rod bearings? if your bearing show no signs of wear, then just reuse them, but if they do, then yeah, wait til you take them out to see which ones you have, then go pick them up from honda, they should have them in stock, i think they're around 8-10 bucks each (per half), so around 40 bucks for all new rod bearings.

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/COMPRESSION NUMBERS***

yeah, they really aren't so low that you would notice much of a power loss especially if it happened gradually over time, just get some smoke. do you smell burning oil in the car with the vents open when you notice the smoke out the exhaust? you sure it's even oil?

BoosTedZSix 05-23-2005 01:32 PM

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/COMPRESSION NUMBERS***

im sure it is. i was behind my brother a few days ago and he gunned it. and it didnt start smoking till about after 4k. blue smoke. you can smell it after you push the car. driving normally it doesnt smell. and also when i pulled out my plugs. they were white. which im assuming its lean as hell. i will take a picture of one a little bit later and post it up. put some oil in number 2 cylinder and did a compression test that way and it shot up to 200 :-\. what are ls motors supposed to be at?

BoosTedZSix 05-23-2005 04:07 PM

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/COMPRESSION NUMBERS***

the pics clearly show. i mean clearly show something is fucked up somewhere. how could the car be running so damn lean? i havent changed the spark plugs. im thinking i will anyways since its fucked up.

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/SPARK PLUG PICS***

first your #'s arent horrible nor good but anything below 150 is gonna show some wear and burn oil. You most likely have a clog somewhere in your fuel system. Have you ever replaced the fuel filter? Do you have a stcok or aftermarket fpr. What is your fuel pressure set at?

BoosTedZSix 05-23-2005 05:40 PM

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/SPARK PLUG PICS***

have not replaced the fuel filter but probably will one of these days. stock fpr. dunno what the fuel pressure is

Guy-Fast 05-23-2005 08:29 PM

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/SPARK PLUG PICS***

um you want the problem fixed right? Replace the filter its cheap and they do get clogged. I also recommend buying a fpr gauge they come in handy and are very cheap

BoosTedZSix 05-23-2005 10:38 PM

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/SPARK PLUG PICS***

yeah ill probably do it sometime next week. haha. ill probably order up the gauge sometime this week though. know anywhere i can find one for cheap? i know theres a lot of honda-tech. found a marshall fuel pressure gauge for 45 shipped. or the b&M for 35 shipped but i heard those are prone to bust over time. as far as a fuel pressure regulator. what would you recommend? i dunno about the b&M ones. i was thinking about getting an sx one and replacing the fuel rail while im at it. ;)

projekteg 05-24-2005 05:47 AM

Re: smoking n/a b18a***UPDATE w/SPARK PLUG PICS***

order a fuel pressure gauge from 'inetforce' here in the classifieds, i got mine in like 3 days for 35 shipped. also, on a stock motor, you really shouldn't have any need for an fpr, just get a gauge if you want to be sure your fuel pressure is in check, and yeah, replace your fuel filter, and then if your fuel pressure is low after that, your pump could have taken a ---- on you.
