smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and overheating...

i turned the mbc up from 10psi to 12psi and afer a hard 1st to 2nd i stopped at a light and my temp gauge went to about 3/4 hot. then when i got home, i opened the hood and the radiator fan was working but there was smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and the catch can breather.
while in idle the temp went back to normal but then started going up just about half way. what the ---- could it be? head gasket? fried rings? :'(

bye bye hg :-* check your oil and coolant to see if they have mixed any.

Re:smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and overheating...

no oil in coolant or coolant in the oil. after 15 minutes of the car being off, i checked the oil, the radiator fluid
and no mixed fluids. and the oil level was right where it was 2 weeks ago when i did an oil change? :-\ i turned the car on and the radiator fan came on in less then 4 minutes cause the car was stil hot and i left the radiator cap off so i could rev it a little and see if water flows and it does. wtf? could the hg be just a little fucked up? well i turned the boost back down to 10psi :-X any opinions on this crap?

Re:smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and overheating...

do a comp. test and a leak down test, i thought my ---- was fucked b/c it was smoking on decel, after a comp. and leak down test, i figured it was my turbo smoking, took the turbo off and inspected it, it was fine, turned out to be an axle seal leaking tranny fluid on to the firewall and dripping on the dp :P moral of the story is, it could be anything.

how is it now that you have your boost turned back down?

i haven't taken it out for a spin yet. but when i checked it i kept the rpm at 4k in neautral for a good 2 minutes and then i looked to see if it was smoking from the breathers and it wasn't. i'm gonna drive it real soon to check it out.

yea ima do a compression check nhope it's good.

Not sure about the temp but also check your pcv valve. Yes do a compression check. I have also heard of head lift under boost but fine at idle so that sort of rules out the excesive blow-by at idle. Ring land maybe?

Re:smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and overheating...

i don't have a pcv valve. i emptied it out(pcv valve)and i put it back in and ran a hose from the pcv valve to a catch can that just has a breather hole and is not connected to the intake on the turbo.

Sound like you might have some broken rings. If it's broken rings you should be able to tell because of a lack of power. When I broke mine, smoke came out the breather filter constantly, and the car felt sluggish.

my car doesn't feel slugish at all. it feels like it has the same power, it just overheats after 8 or 10 runs and smoke comes out of the breathers. i just got home from buying a compression checker. the truth shall be revealed.

i'ma do a compression test this afternoon >:( if it's the hg, the operation begins tommorow. i've never done this before :'( so it's gonna be a long day. this is on a b series

Re:smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and overheating...

if it's the headgasket then it has to be a realy small leak. i went for a quick drive to the store and to and from i doged it and it didn't overheat this time. last night when i went to buy the compresion checker tool i also bought some restore oil additive cause when i did an oil change 2 weeks ago i used cheap walmart brand supertech 20-50w and i started thinking maybe that oil started getting too thin, especialy under hard use. who knows, i haven't done the compression check yet though if it's all good on that i'm adding synthetic oil and i'm dumping the walmart oil all over their front entrance.lol not realy

Re:smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and overheating...

i did the compression check but i did it without having the throttle body open while checking the compression. anyways it's a b16 and it was 90-95 on first compression stroke on all four cylinders and 210-215 on the 5th to 7th compression stroke on all four. i know those are good readings but i didn't have the throttle wide open while testing. does it make a big difference? anybody ever done it like that?

ring lands own you!! sad to say but you need new pistons

Re:smoke comming out of the valve cover breather and overheating...

i don't need new pistons you schmuck ;D my uncles a mechanic and i called him up and he said it doesn't make a difference if the tb is open or closed. it stil stays open a little on its' own. it's the walmart supertech oil that's
loosing viscosity and creates more friction and the car heats up. i put in mobil1 synthetic like it had 2 weeks ago and no more problems.
