shaved flywheel
 

well i dropped off my backup flywheel with my machinist and told him to take 5lbs off the back ring that protrudes above the rest of the back flywheel. He said it "should" be ok with out balancing it... Hes using a lathe to shave so i'm thinking it might be ok...

any thoughts, experiences???

p.s. i'm planning on installing my new Clutch Specailties clutch in tomorow (hopefully with the shaved flywheel) that i got from Mike (88 Turbo Crx).

first impressions... sharp, snappy feel pedal feel and not as heavy/stiff as i thought compared to my lil bros ACT 6 puck... grips like a MOFO! only put 45 miles on it tonight, still babying it for a lil bit longer. i'll keep ya posted... for the price, you can't beat it... i'm sure when all you group buyers install it you'll agree. at this point its kinda hard to tell the difference of the shaved flywheel.

Anny boady know if the mith about stock lightened flywheels exploding is true?Ive heard there not verry reliable and that they tend to fall appart :-\.

whats a good/safe amount to take of a d series flywheel? where do you take it off from?

well initially i was gonna buy a lightened flywheel but after reading about some people shaving their own thats what i opted to do, much cheaper $50 vs $200+.

I read some posts where some guys had a friend-of-a-friend's friend who had a shaved OEM flywheel blowup and shrappnell flying into the passenger side cabin, but i couldn't find no hard evidence. i just shaved 4lbs off making it 13lbs and theres still a good abount of material left. My machinist even said he does it all the time for the circle track guys and they have no probs.
i think its safe as long as you don't get too extreme...like shaving off 10lbs...haah...

as you can see the outer portion where the grooves are cut in, theres some material you could still shave off if you wanted to go lighter. i liked how my machinist put the groves in for extra cooling!
just playing...

yea, being a machinist/ toolmaker myself, i'd have to say by the looks of it, he did a pretty good job.

just a quick question tho.... at the bottom of the grooves, is there a radius or just a hard right angle? i hope there is a radius cause if there isn't it might be subject to stress cracking when heated up.... but, that's highly unlikely.
