Searched - Best D-series to build?
Been browsing these forums for about 4 years. I live in TN and my fiance and I are looking into building up a civic or hatch here soon for fun and I was wondering if I could get someone to answer me a question real quick. I searched and didn't find a very good answer.
What is the best d-series to build? I see FJD offers some awesome bottom end and top end pricing for kits to build the sohc motors. (I'm a k20 driver as of now.. got an 02 SI hatch supercharged... blah.. nothing special... just gets me to work and back lol) I only have basic experience with K series and older B series. I had an 89, and 90 SI prelude. Still love those cars lol. Anyways.. yeah im a fag and no I didn't post pron yet, just hoping someone could answer my question about the best D to build. I hear of frankensteins and so forth, but is there a better D motor to build that I could just keep as a long block and not switch heads and so forth? Thanks guys. |

Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
dual point all the way i agree.
why not a mini me a6/z6 ? |
Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
I would say you havent learned a whole lot if you want to know what d is best. Its probably one of the most popular honda motors to boost and has been done about 897324578245 times.
everyone knows its the D13B1. :6 |
Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
This all depends on your budget. If you want to spend a little and do the vitara build? or do you want to spend alot and do a all forged build?
I would do a d16a6 with a better cam and tt rods, and some vitaras and a big ------- snail!!! Lo buck build and some good power. Here is a low buck build with some good numbers https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...?topic=92359.0 But its not just a built motor that makes your car fast. You have got to be able to put the power down on the pavement. And that it the kind of thing that will nickle and dime you to death. |
Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
What's so good about the a6 and dpfi?
y8s are supposed to give good head but I'm sure the z6 does as well, without the timing annoyance |
Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
Y8's can have oiling issues at time. My no. 3 and 4 rod bearings told me that once.

Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
JD spoke of the y8 heads giving him troubles with boost a while back. If I was going to boost any d, it would be the d16z6. A6 would be a fine 2nd choice.

Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
i dunno why everyones stuck on the sohc bs.... the ultimate d series is the dohc zc IMO
bigger intake valves than any sohc motor, and the exhaust are the same size as the biggest sohc motors. it might be slightly harder to source parts, but with a will theres a way, i have plenty of goodies on mine.... straight from JG engine dynamics. look them up they have dynos of 300hp b series race motors ect.... Notes: If there was ever a head porters dream it would be the ZC or D16A9 head. These heads were produced in a time when Honda was really not after max performance. As a result of this they left a lot of room for improvement. Hp gains in these heads of 25Hp are not uncommon in race engines with no other modifications. In these early heads since there are is lot of casting flaws the stock ports flow as much as 10% from one port to another. Compare that to a more modern head like a GSR that flows with in 1.5% of each other. Fixing this alone is a large improvement and our Redline or Pro Series head does this. These heads also have room for enlarging the ports and raising them for some really large gains in cfm with out loosing velocity. These heads also have a really large chamber with no quench area, and lots of room for welding. Gains of to 1 full point in compression can be safely done without the need of changing pistons or excessive head milling. This cost of this service is an additional $150.00. For more info, visit our head section of our website. |

Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
I'd say boost whatever is in the car. FJT has rods for D16's and soon for D15's. I boosted my Y7 and then it also spun a bearing but he took a daily beating of 14psi.

Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
If I ever find a cheap or free D15 then I'm gonna build one. Hell I don't even have a civic for that matter. It'll just encourage me to get one though. lol :P Seriously, just build what you've got or I guess if you want to build something on the side and keep the car running in the mean time. I'd still go with whatever you can get the cheapest. Now that FJT will have D15 rods that makes those B2, B8, Z1's etc... lumps people pulled out worth something. Not saying they weren't worth anything before but atleast you can make some numbers out of them.

Re: Searched - Best D-series to build?
Come up to Steve's pad next month when Julio and I are there and bring it with you. Otherwise I'm not sure when I'm heading south anytime soon. But consider the block taken when we meet up again bro. Not sure what Senior Bustamante and I are doing. We might head down that way as he wanted to check out King Motorsports. Should take like a whole 5 minutes as it's pretty small.
