rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blown apex seals
ok so i just picked up this rx-7 with blown apex seals.
i've never worked on a rotary, but i'm not afraid to start now. the plan is to have it turbo. the question is should i buy a jdm turbo 13b motor for 800-1000 from an importer or should i rebuild the 13b i have and turbo it. side questions are are the non turbo and turbo motors the same? how much hp/boost can a nonturbo motor handle with a fresh rebuild? (i know i hate these questions also, but don't flame me too bad. if it would be better to rebuild the one i have i'd rather do it cause i don't want the stock turbo anyway. |
Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blow apex seals
Search N/A Turbo build on Rx7club.com
But honestly I'd say it's worth it to get a full rebuild kit and just do it yourself, if the broken bits didn't score the irons you'll be alright. That motor can be out and apart in ~1hr30min if you have a long enough pipe to get the front cover off. Impact gun won't work more than likely, use the pipe. You never can know the exact condition of a JDM unit. |

cool, i'm gonna be doing a lot of reading on these motors for the next 2 weeks till i get paid again. i'm gonna pull the motor sometime this week and break it down to see how everything looks.
the problem is it's been sitting for 10 years so i'm not sure how this motor is gonna look inside. i might end up looking for a blown motor and rebuild that one. i've seen what motors look like after a few years of sitting in yards so i can just imagine what this one is gonna look like. i picked it up for $200 and a $165 tow $365 for a car i've been wanting for the last 8-10 years. i'm pretty happy only a little bondo on passenger side fender and a tiny bit of rust on the sunroof, but not inside the sunroof track. before wash Attachment 17164 after wash Attachment 17165 |

Not bad, looks in good shape. So where are the money shots?

Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blow apex seals
---- I'm jealous.
Pretty sweet you got a GXL too, four pot brakes and such. It's an S4 is it? Rotors are a lower compression than later N/A rotors but you're better off getting TII rotors or something of the like anyway, as the N/A rotors were all LPC. |

i'm not afraid of all the "problems" these cars have.
waffles... i'm not sure what you mean by "s4" more pics Attachment 17155 Attachment 17156 Attachment 17157 Attachment 17158 Attachment 17159 Attachment 17160 Attachment 17161 and a pic of the crx i'm selling after getting this running. just bought her "new" rims and tires. tires had less then 500 miles on them and now i don't lose traction in second gear anymore Attachment 17162 i'm gonna take the motor out and drop it in my wifes 91 civic 4dr then put her d15b2 in the crx to sell. i'll get less money for it, but then our 4g4d will be fast. here she is Attachment 17163 i'm glad i found this rx7 today, i'm so excited. i've been looking on craigslist every day for fc rx7 mk3 supra 3g camaro 1g eclipse 65-67 chevelle 65-70 nova i search for cars under 1k and i've been looking for about a month. i've seen a few things, but something about this ad made me drive 50 minuets to look at the car. when i saw the interior and the body condition i couldn't pass it up. the tow truck driver offered me $500 right when he saw it. we were talking and i told him i paid 200 for it and he said "i'll give you 500 right now". i didn't even think about it. |

Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blown apex seals
what is an s4 and how do i know if it is one?
also i'm not afraid to put an lsd in it. this is going to be my daily driver, but it's going to be a track car too. full interior, but ready for the track. not like my crx, gutted to hell and back i'll probably put my 1k watt sub in it too. nothing better then country music bumping in the ghetto. |
Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blown apex seals
Pop country is for fags.
Series 4 was 86-88, Series 5 was 89-91. Updates were the ecu, body things, as well as some different engine components, mainly the lightened rotors/high CR. But I think one piece eccentric shafts became standard for the Turbo model as well. I don't remember if there was a GXL model for S5 though, your car could have been in the half way point, built in 88 labeled an 89 or something. |
Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blown apex seals
i'll check the build date, but i know it first sold in 1990
also who is talking about pop country, i'm talking about the old ---- i grew up listening to. either that or some hardcore punk or some rockabilly. |

Rockabily and rotories. How much better could this thread get! :6 I've always wanted a 7. Hell I bought a 1G Rx7 haynes manual just to read and learn about these mysterious creatures and a few other rotoray books. The best part is that I've never owned a 7 before. 8)

Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blown apex seals
That's a pretty sweet deal for $365. I used to have a 4dr just like your wifes...is that an EX??
|
Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blown apex seals
no it's an lx with the shitty dual point motor.
i'm pretty sure we are gonna put the turbo zc from my crx in the 4dr. |

Swap the suspension bits while your at it. |
Re: rotary guys chime in please... just got an 89 rx-7 with blown apex seals
suspension bits consists of egay coilovers and blown out oem shocks :S
i'll probably swap them over anyway cause that 4dr needs to get lowered NOW. |

Dear wafflesincars,
I hope what you are spewing into this thread is just what you are paroting back. You seem like a typical "I use to have a rx7" owner.

Hard to say what you should do, as so many different things should be taken into account. But I was able to rebuild and bridgeport my six-port aka N/A motor. Then turbo it for about $900 total. |

As for the E-shaft though, I know the earlier 13b's flywheel seat was welded on and balanced after the forging from the factory. |

The only use of a multi-piece eccentric shaft in a modern 'mazda' wankle is in 20b and other race engines useing three or more rotors. Also, their are S5 GXLs At least know what you are talking about if you are going to give someone advice.
