is it rod knock?

I've never heard rod knock, or any knock for that matter.

My freshly swapped h22 is making some strange ------- knocking noises. I bought it for $400 from some guy in Jacksonville. He said the motor had no problems. ::) Anyways, I got it running yesterday and it's makes some knocking noise. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is and if it would be an easy fix.

Thats a video of it. Don't pay attention to the actual video, I was trying to get the camera in the best position to hear the noise.
Here's one from the engine bay. The noise I'm talking about is the low/deeper noise you hear towards the end of decel. That video was prior to doing a valve lash adjustment. It's much quieter now, but it still makes that knocking noise.

It sounds like a normal engine at idle(besides a slight valve tick), but when revved up it doesn't make the noise until at the very bottom of decel. It takes a certain load for it to make that noise and doesn't make it during decel while in gear at all.

The engine seems to be running strong from what I've felt so far(took it to 7k once).

Worst case scenario is the crank is completely fucked. I will replace the crank with an f22(95mm) crank and rods and use the h22 pistons to make an h23vtec. I just need this motor to last a few weeks going to and from work(20 miles one way) for a few weeks so I can save up money.

in the first video, it sounds to me like something mounted to the engine is hitting something. i have heard rod knock quite a few times, i have spun plenty of bearings in my day. i really couldnt hear anything in the 2nd video. who did you get it from in jacksonville? i know quite a few people there. that might help in knowing if it was someone that would do something like that.

did you replace the timing belt?
if so you might the balance shaft out sinc.

The guy's name is Ahmed, goes by AJ(he's puerto rican). He hangs out with a guy named Christian, who happens to own probably one of the best paint shops in FL, so I've heard anyways. He goes by AutoTek on the forums, but I think his shops name is auto techniques or something like that.

I've checked and checked again for anything rattling or hitting the engine and I can't find anything. I have poly filled mounts so they're solid as a rock. The engine don't move for ----.

At first I thought it was my downpipe hitting my front crossmember, but the downpipe doesn't come close and its solid as a rock. I can barely budge it with a big screwdriver.

I did the h23 manual tensioner conversion. I've done many in the past without any problems. The balance shaft belt isn't on there as I just left it off. I've done this to many other motors as well without any problems.

Also..I ran the motor without a crank pulley or timing cover to see if it was the tbelt hitting anything. It still made the noise. :-\

that name sounds familiar but i cant find him on any local forums i am on. i did find him on cb7tuner.com and i have seen his car around, but i dont know him.

how is your oil pressure? most of the times i have had a rod knock, my oil light would come on at idle.

My oil light doesn't come on while the car is on at all. I'm going to hook up an oil gauge this weekend and see what its at though.

And yea, he's on cb7tuner. That's how I know the guys.

Re: is it rod knock?

it sounds like the noise is coming from the bottom end.
Check your exhaust for leaks. About 11-12 seconds in on the 2nd vid...look to the right of the header, there's a little white thing that moves over an inch or 2 when the engine is revved. I dunno if its a coincidence, or the cause

The rod knock i experienced with my h23 was horribly worse than that. It made all kinds of sounds at all rpms and all loads. I've also have a clutch go out on me and that sounded like rod knock, but drove worse than limp mode.

Check you oil for metal shavings if you haven't done so already....

here's 1 of the bearings. They look pretty much the same.

Here's how all the mains look.

The pistons seem to have some scoring on them. Pretty sure they're still salvageable though.

Here's 1 of the thrust washers. The rest are actually worse than this one.

There was some definite oil starvation going on. I'm going to replace the oil pump and clean the block oil passages thoroughly. The crank didn't have any deep scoring, just scoring on the surface that I'm sure can be removed by turning/machining the crank.

I'm just gona go ahead and build my h23 vtec. I have a good crank and brand new bearings. I have to wait to get some money though so I can take the f22 piston/rods and h22/piston rods to the shop so the h22 pistons can be pressed onto the f22 rods. After that's done, I'm going to save up for an oil pump, unless the f22 can be used. Also plan on using arp headstuds and do a valve job while the head is off.

Should be good for an easy 200whp NA out of this motor. The compression will be close to 11:1. Plan to throw boost at it later down the road. But in a different chassis.

damn, that sucks. i would send those pics to the guy you bought it from. thats shitty.

boost on 11:1? :o i know its possible, but not real easy.
