Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

As the title said, is it needed? If so, how many miles? Thanks

assumed you gave the cylinders a hone job as well to right? Yes when installing new rings it takes a little time to seat the rings in. No trips to redline for atleast a few hundred miles, change the oil at 500 and let her rip.

also use regular oil, not synthetic!

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

just be sure to give the rings pressure so they wear in properly, as in no driving like a grandma for the first miles or the rings won't seat completely before they glaze the cylinder liners.

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

Ya I was told you have to do a few nice hard rips through some gears after a rebuild to seat the rings

Definetely not to redline, but at least get movin quick a few times to get them to seat properly

Then drive normal (like a normal person would lol) for 250+ miles, change the oil, check the filter for shavings and if all is clean and clear ------- victory burnouts

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

its not that you dont wanna drive grandma ish you just dont wanto hold continues rpms such as open road driving, you wanto be up and down in rpms like city driving, just dont take the rpms past 4,000 for the first 500-1000 miles but thats all on your prefrence, in general the finer grit hone you go with the longer the rings will take to seat

bah I've used synthetic on the last 3 engines I've just built. Lots of new nissans come with synthetic right off the assembly line.

also Endyn recommends it ;)

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

on my last build i started it let it idle, for 15 mintues so i could warm up, then went out and tuned it. the first 50 miles where hardcore rapage. i have 4k on it now and its running pretty. but its egging me for more boost so rods are the next step. and ill do the same thing again

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

don't warm it up untill you're ready to run it, while it's warming up... don't rev it. drive it for at least 20 miles like you would reguarly drive it (but no trips to redline).

give it gas up to 4k in 3rd and 4th then let off the gas and don't touch the clutch pedal..... this will load the cylinders and push the rings outward, know what i mean?

here's a really good explination...

yes, i know that it's basically for motorcycles but it's all the same!

good luck w/ your new found fun!

Thanks for moving this thread while I was making this post fucker. :P

So many different opinions on engine break-in, but this one I believe in, although I would have let it cool down 100%, warmed back up and then raped.

really break in depends on the hone and how long you plan to have the motor last, IMO

This was how I was told to break in a motor. Guy from my work told me that he also said Total seal rings worked the best for him.

Either they seat or they dont. Jeff's advice is the best just dont go rippin to 9k on it. Change the oil at 250 if your ---- 500 for normal people and you should be good to go. Self control is the key

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

That Motoman article was actually really good. The way he said to seat the rings is the same way we used to seat em on the vintage road course cars at my old job, and it actually does work better. Tops of the pistons were usually grayish/white, but there was never any brown color on the piston sides to indicate blow-by.

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

everyone has a different way...

like someone said, decelerating with the motor coming down is a good way.

just really its hard to go wrong...

one thing NOT to do is add prolong or anyother no-smoke/engine restorers. they will not seat completely with taht ---- in there.

even if the ---- was in their before they might not seat very well. the prolong sticks to everything and you can hone the cylinders but once the oil gets around on its path it'll pick up more prolong.

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

i read like 908934875 post from the net before i break mine in. and i decide to go with what the bke guys said.

i let it warmed up, then take it right out, and do the acc/dcc thing. and i think i did hit redline(ops :P)
rans fine until now, but now think i have a lot of blow by cause i`ve ran it NA for too long :-\

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

break in and hone is gonna determine how long it lasts not how hard it runs, guys that build track only cars dont even worry about break in, run a few hard pulls on the dyno, throw it in the car, do a few burnouts and check for leaks and its ready to go but those motors depending on how well it was put together and is tuned will at best last 1-2 seasons

if i wanted a motor to last as long as possible, id do a stock hone, run the suggested oil and change at suggested time periods for the suggested amount of miles and just make sure to keep the rpms low starting out and slowly start to raise the rpms the more miles that it sees until its considered to be "broken in"

Re:Replaced piston rings, do I need to break it in?

We kinda got tired of rebuilding engines every 500 miles. That's why we started taking the time to do things normally, instead of the slap together and let er rip deal. Besides, you can only listen to the boss bitch so many times about the cost of rebuilding a motor every month :P Plus those old vintage guys really don't really beat on their machines that badly.
