rebuild

im rebuilding my zc this week. how necessary is it to send the head out to see if it is straight. should i have it milled down? how much would it cost?
the head gasket is blown. and i have un even compression across all 4 cylinders.
ive asked this about 5 times before i think ::) but what HG would you reccomend. no turbo no crazy ----. im just trying to keep the car rolling and the co$t down. im going with an arp stud set about 100 on ebay. does that sound fair?

lol. If it overheated I would say have it surfaced for sure unless you want to take the head back off later and do it after it leaks. :-\ I wouldn't mill it. No real reason to since you aren't lookng for any performance gains. Why are you buying an ARP stud kit? It's not needed for your application since you said you aren't going for anything crazy and you just want to keep it going. I would just buy the cheapest head gasket you can find and use the stock bolts. Now, if you plan on upgrading later on and adding a turbo, I would say go gor the ARP studs, but otherwise, no.

Re:rebuild

u cant do a head gasket with out replacing the head bolts. they simply stretch out. i replaced a head in my 1.5 and reused the bolts and one of the bitches busted off. all the seinor techs at the shop looked down their nose and said never do a head without replacing the bolts. i then in turn had to go to a industrial fastener store(house of a million blots)to get raked 13-16$ for a bolt! :o. lets just say i just got one. times 10 bolts i think ???. lot of money. the arp kit is 95$.

its not that im not going for perormance. i wouldn't have put the zc in there in the first place. im just low budget. i would kinda like to jack the compression up and do someting with the ignition.

Yes you can. You fucked up. There is a maximum limit to the amount they can stretch. You just didn't check that before you went ahead and reused them. I'm not saying it's a good idea or recommending it, but there is no need to spend $100 on a set of performance head studs if you have no intentions of modifying it.

Re:rebuild

if i were you i wouldnt reuse honda bolts in a performance application. If you were just keeping it running you could use them a few times depending on how much they stretched. As for head gaskets, i highly reccomend a stock honda gasket, ive heard bad things about Fel pro etc even in normal apps... so id stick to a genuine honda one.
