Reassembling tranny cases

According to the Helms manual the trans housing should just slide onto the shafts and mate up to the clutch housing. For some reason, this isn't working. It appears that the bearing on the end of the mainshaft is not going into the tranny housing very easily so I cannot reassemble the transmission. I have everything lined up properly, but it just won't go on and when I pull it back apart after getting it down as far as it will go, the bearing on the end of the mainshaft is always stuck in the trans housing. Any thoughts?

You putting the tranny back together or back on the car? ???

What engine/tranny is it? And what were you doing that has the tranny off in the first place?

Re: Reassembling tranny cases

I am reassembling the trans, I don't have trouble putting it into the car. The car just locked up the other day and it can only be pushed with the clutch in. Upon disassembly I found some cracked bearings that I replaced and now I am just trying to get the cases back together so that I can put the trans back into the car. It is a 92 Integra GS w/ a cable trans.

I don't know chief... Maybe you don't have a bearing or two seated properly?

I just had a Y8 apart a few weeks ago. Other than some stray bearings falling out, the case wasn't too difficult to get apart or put back together. The snap ring was the hardest part... :-\

I would just make sure you have everything assembled 100%. O0

Re: Reassembling tranny cases

I got the trans apart with no trouble at all, the bearings won't seat in the case that is the problem. There are 2 to line up, the differential and mainshaft and I know they are because I can see the differential bearing between the gap in the case and when I take them apart, the mainshaft bearing is stuck in the bore of the tranny housing instead of on the end of the mainshaft. When I used to assemble ATV cases I always had to tighten the bolts to get them back together, I don't know if that is how this one should go together also. I tried lightly tapping with a rubber mallet and it just won't go.

What tranny you working on???????

To remove the stuck bearing, lay the tranny case on the work bench, the hit the outside of the case where the bearing is at with a rubber hammer, it will drop out.

You can also sit the case in the sun and it will drop out on it's own.

I don't have any stuck bearings in the case, that is not the problem. My problem is that I have everything back into the clutch housing and I am trying to put the trans housing back on and it won't go. I had to replace the ISB because it cracked. So, I am just trying to do the final step of reassembly on the trans, which is a 92 Integra GS cable trans, so that it can be put back into the car.

Re: Reassembling tranny cases

getting the last shift shaft into place to drop the case is a PITA!!!!!!! I takes me and a buddy with a tiny screwdriver to pop the shaft into place so the case drops............

I think selecting 4th gear helps somewhat. DO NOT FORCE the cases, EVER!!!!!!! I'll take pics of Blundars botched buy when I can. They hammered it together and it DESTROYED the outer case along with other pieces.

Are you referring to the "shift piece" or the longest shaft for the shift forks?
