Re-Pinning Distributors - D16Y8 into OBD0 Engine bay... Any with experience?

Hey Guys,

We are getting ready to make the switch to OBD1 for our CRX MiniMe Project. It currently has an A6 Block with a Y8 Head, and is running an unmodified OBD0 Distributor. In switching to OBD1, I have to ditch the OBD0 distributor and move to OBD1 or OBD2. Since the head is an OBD2 Head, I figured I would just get the D16Y8 Distributor (TD08 I believe), since it will install right into the head without modifying the ears.

In doing the research on this, there seem to be two different distributors for this engine code, one for the OBD2a and another for the OBD2b. The D16Y8 was available from 1996-2000, and the one from 1996-1998 is obd2a and the 1999-2000 is obd2b.

RyWire has adapter sets for converting OBD2b to OBD1, but nothing for converting OBD2a to OBDAnything. So because they don't offer it, I am assuming there is an easier way to do the mod. Either that or it's not possible at all.

So I am hoping (and this is where I need your experience) that I can re-pin an OBD2a Y8 Distributor, to my OBD0 harness. And I'm thinking that all I'll need are OBD0 connector bodies for the OBD2a distributor.

Am I on the right track, or am I just being an idiot?

I made an adapter for the OBD1 dizzy to my OBD2A harness. Just a plug from each is all it takes.

In your case you need the plugs from an OBD0 dizzy and the plugs from the harness for the dizzy you are using.

D16A, D15B, and D16Y all have the same distributor flange, pick one. It's D16Z that has the oddball distributor flange.

OBD1 (D15B7, for example) has the familiar OBD1 pin out.

OBD2A has OBD1 pinout, wire positions, and wire colors, but the 8p and 2p plugs are incorporated in a single plug housing.

OBD2B just runs a single OBD1-style 8p plug, with the blk/yel switched 12V wire in the unused position, and no accommodation for the blue tach signal wire found in the OBD0-1 2p plug.

All will work, I like the newer stuff due to less miles. ;)

So can I take off the grey connector bodies on an OBD2a (Early Y8) distributor, and put the milky white (OBD0) connector bodies on?

Nope.

You can get the small pins to swap OBD0-1, but OBD0-1 to OBD2A pins are a different design. Big pins are, I believe, different between OBD0, OBD1, and OBD2A (and non existant on OBD2B).

You can cut a pigtail off a spare harness and splice to your harness, or take junk distributor and junk harness and make a jumper harness.
