Re:race shop

My brother and I have always wanted to open a shop. Not really a speed shop with a showroom full of intakes, but more of a smallish 'fabrication' type shop that would do custom one-off setups and the like. Motor swaps of all kinds. Import parts from Japan etc.. One of us will still keep a regular day job, and start off small....but hey its still just a dream right now. :)

Re:race shop

Hey Hydro, since all you're going to do once you get your license is street race, why not just street race now? It's still illegal once you get your license and so why not start now so you don't have to wait to get it hows that sound? Also then you won't bring up everyone else's insurance once you get caught. But who knows maybe I'm just crazy and the only reason to have a license is to street race.

I have been running a custom fabrication shop in Richmond VA for a few years now, and I can tell you its hard to make a living out of it, on the east coast anyway. Most of my products(Intercoolers, manifolds, downpipes) go to California. If you are sereous about doing it have something to fall back on during the lean times, I do basic auto repair and diesel maintenance as well. There are soooooo many people in the performance business it`s hard to get your foot in the door, plus all the do it your selfers out there. Most guys that want to get in to the four cylinder front wheel drive performance thing are young and don`t have alot of money, and if they do have money or credit they look at the name brand high end stuff first. look for young untapped markets(mini, hyundi, kia)the Honda market is full, but be careful, alot of these markets are untapped for a reason, no money in them. I tried the Saturn market with no luck, a few sales and a lot of questions but not worth it in the long run. Dont get me wrong I love it and can`t imagine doing anythig else, butit`s HARD work and a lot of hours for not a lot of pay. I made more money in less time working for repair shops and car dealers. I guess it just have to move to the west coast 8)

when i get my license i will be 18 and have my own insurance thats why i waited till i was 18 so my granpasrents dont have to pay more and i dont race with out a license cause i already got caught driving with out 1 and got charged with grand theft auto and street raceing but all the charges where dropped later

I have really wanted to start a race shop as soon as I got into the whole import scene a few years ago. I am currently a technician at a Nissan dealer, pay is ok. But I would rather have fun with what I do. In our area we have very few "high performance" race shops doing lots of custom stuff, they are all mainly v8 shops. I think if me and beau were to make a shop we would be successful, but it would take a lot of long nights and a lot of saving to do! I would be very open to what we do as well, not only Honda/Acuras I think we could be pretty versatile, especially with the growth of the Ford/GM FWD area.

Maybe someday... :o

Re:race shop

o thats bad i want some one to make me a sheet metal dash

customcoach 02-17-2003 09:45 AM

Re:race shop

The whole dash or just the gauge cluster? I can make you a copy of the gauge cluster to mount custom gauges in no problem, stainless or aluminum, but the whole dash is a little harder. I have seen a guy localy that striped all the padding off his dash, filled in the holes and painted it, it looked great, but never a sheet metal dash on a street car.

Re:race shop

I've been working on getting a shop open. I'll tell you its very hard to get going. The amount of money it takes just blows my mind. Unfortunately for me I am broke and so are all my friends. I have to do it the old fashion way.

As of right now we are focusing on the dsm cars and Honda/Acura. Building manifolds, intercooler, and so on. Lots of custom work, seems like general repair is the easiest way to make money though.

Re:race shop

yeah, one day..... the only viable way to make a profit of this is to open a regular shop and do custom work on the side, slowly building it up.. theres no way of blindly opening "xx racing" and expect customers, people want proven products and more importantly proven wins at the track, you will have to chose which market to aim at.. import drag racing (straight line heros), roundy roundy track racing.. or rallying (motorsport of the gods)

e.g i want to concentrate on tarmac rallying , there is a lot of market for this in this country.. lots, step one is to choose a popular car you can make a profit on, ideally i'd like to work with renault 5 gt turbos but you cant base a buisness on one car
so look for something a bit newer, a bit more popular with the right type of person and that still has real potential... and we have the peugeot 205 gti, renault clio 16v etc...

so there you have a "hot hatch" place that does regular servicing and repairs, but also has a hot hatch that is prepared for fast road use.. one promo car there, also sticker it up and rally it at weekends for extra publicity ..

ive already started to prepare my renault 5 gt turbo for road rallying..

at the end ofthe day you have two choices.. sell bolt on ---- and make money, or do custom work and have more fun, gain lots of respect , and have less cash

I personally would like to open a Hyundai tuning shop (you can stop laughing now). Honestly, I'm a Hyundai tech now, and the 2.7L V6 has plenty of nuts, and it can take at least 7lbs of boost in stock trim (I know, our head tech has a one-off turbo kit on his 03 Tiburon.) That's an untapped market, and Hyundais are selling like wildfire. Just my 2 cents.

I want to open a shop so I can sell L.E.D. muffler tips and "powered by mexican" stickers. That market is hot right now!!!!!!
Maybe offer customers a run on my butt dyno.

Re:race shop

"well well, look at the city slicker pullin up in his fancy German car."
homer:
"This car was made in Guatemala."
"Wellllll, pardon us Mr. gucci lofers"
homer:
"I bought these shoes from a hobo."
"well la te da mr part avenue manicure"
homer:
"i'm sorry i believe in good grooming."
