Question about 1989 Prelude
 
Ok, I have a 1989 Prelude engine waiting for me.
All I know it's a 2.0L, alloy block, DOHC and 150hp or thereabouts with MPFI.
What engine code would this be?

I have no idea but I know these are killer engines for torque. Turbo it.

I believe it's a B20A5 and not the greatest engine. 135hp, not 150.

Yeah I figured it was probably a B series, at least the head looked like it. Oh and my friend says it's a vtec engine.

Heh, definitely not vtec. They are indeed 135hp stock. They do have a fairly long stroke and many guys that turbo them end up with more torque than hp. I'm working on mine right now.

i had a b20a5 lude, and it was can quick, not fast, the SI's had 140 hp i belive. I been told you cant run very much boost on them because of bad pistons/rods. There diffrent from all other b-series, even the normal vtec head ls/vtec wont fit without lots of work. But good luck on whatever you do

Let it be known...i owned one of those motors in a lude. I tell you what. Its not hard to vtec the damn things. All you have to do is bore out the headstud holes 1mm towards the back side of the head on the intake and 1mm out towards the front of the head for the exhaust. Use the stock headgasket and whala, you have vtec. Add a vtec controller to control fuel and vtec engagement. Now heres the hard part, cant rev with the stock oil pump past 7500 rpms. I have never expierimented myself with trying to fit a vtec oil pump to the block. I will see if a friend of mine would like to compare pumps here soon and we will see. Ive always wanted to know. By the math that i have done. If you can find an adequate oil supply the bottom end is good for 8k rpms but rods and pistons/rings will need to be changed out with aftermarket. I turbo'd mine and i ran 10psi all day everyday and it was fine. Never hurt a thing. so there is my input

I would think that if you put an external oil pump on it I wouldn't see a problem. I think that you could then run it to 8 grand if you wanted. The question is how would you run it. Take off the impeller off of the oil pump and just run the external or run both as a piggy back system?

talk to guys at www.3geez.com its for 3rd generation accords but the that year lude and the 3rd gen accords are similiar.

Ok if the motor doesn't have vtec, then what's this thing on the end of the exhaust cam?

i own one...thye r not vtec.....they are fairly quick....they cannot be vtec without alot of fabrication thye r not the b20b or z like the crv motor....any questions u need answered about this car ask me...cause i know most of the answers.....

That would be the number once cyl. position sensor I believe.

yea its the TDC sensor. same as the ones on a d16a1. i have an 88 lude in front of my house. i bought it for 150 bones put a timing belt in it, and new head cause all the valves were bent (had a donor motor that i got for free cause it smoked, rings were bad) so im in it around 200 bones, including the car. the only cars ive ever owned were hondas, ive owned almost every make and model over the years, and the lude is the only automatic honda ive ever owned that smokes the tires when you mash from a stop light. gotta love torque!

they are right they definetly are VTAKK, god i wish vtec was never invented, everyone wants that crap like its a drug or something ::)

vtec is only useful if you want to rev to 9k rpms and still pass emissions at cruise. Turbochargers are the drug every engine needs, an ample supply of steroids.
