PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

Ok, tonite I was racing a bmw z3 in my turbo d15b civic and everything was fine shifting from 1-2,2-3, but then shifting 3-4th gear the oil light comes on so i immediately pull into the nearest gas station and turn off the car and pop the hood, i let the car sit for like 10 mins then i checked the oil and the oil was above the highest mark on the dipstick. I had just changed my oil like 3 days ago and i put in 3 1/2 quarts. Thinking that was too much oil now. When i was driving it back home i would hear some kind of noise, dont know what. i popped the hood when i got home and it sounds like its coming from the valvetrain but i could be wrong. Anyone know what I should do and am I fucked or what. Just got into college and dont have much money and this is my only transportation to and from school. :-[

sounds like you toasted a bearing....

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

also i took off the oil filler cap and i didnt see any oil or no oil splashed out as it normally would if the car was running. This mean the sending unit is the cause of this?

before this happedn my car would idle really low like 600-700 rpms like it was going to shut off. Hope this helps anyone who might know why its doing this.

check oil pressure first

Is it a ticking sound? Clacking sound? Knocking sound?

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

also tried this, unscrewed the oil feed line going to the turbo and started the car, the idea was to see if any oil would come out of the feed line and nothing did, does this mean that the oil pressure sensor is bad, and the feed line was completely dry. So my guess is the pump is gone, i really hope i didnt ---- up a bearing. If I was to replace the oil pump and I did mess up a bearing what could happen?

pull the pan and check the rod bearings

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

never built a motor or anything so im a noob to that. Once i remove the pan and see the oil pickup and rods, how will I know if Ive fucked up a rod bearing or not?

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

Too much oil is alot worse than having low oil.

When the oil level is high, the crankshaft travels through the oil on its rotation, and froths it up bad. Once the oil starts to froth, it becomes hard for the pump to pick it up, and the oil thins right out and doesnt do a very good job :1

I think it actually sounds like a bad oil pump. I don't knwo exactly how the honda oiling system works, but spinning one bearing shouldn't totally kill the oil supply to the circuit that the, oil pressure sensor/turbo feed is

try taking off all the fittings in the back of the block and make sure nothing clogged them also, if some silicone/shrapnel/ reandom ---- got in there that would account for the oil light and nothing comming out of the oil feed line

d15bsnail 11-07-2005 01:45 PM

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

so i should undo my fittings on the back of the block and see if anythign is clogging the line?

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

i doubt thats it, but try it. Then pull the pan and remove the rod caps and replace them one at a time so you dont mess yourself up. check to see how chewed up the bearings are. The only times ive seen a motor spin a bearing it was always preceeded by the oil light coming on first, so be prepared for things to be fubar.

removed oil pan and this is what i saw, i found alot of metal shavings , some as big as grits of sand. why would i have metal shavings? I just changed the oil 3 days ago before the oil light came on. There also is enough of the shaving to clogg pickup.

Guys he was running a lightened elcrapo ebay crank pulley. I'm almost positive this toasted his pump. Another friend of mine running a ctr pulley toasted 2 oil pump within two weeks on his boosted ls. After he put a stock pulley back on he had no problems. Also just last week another friend of mine with a newely boosted b17 running the ctr pulley had his oil light mysteriously cut on, but he luckily shut the car off right away so hopefully no damage occured.

dude, ur engine is gonnnne. those metal shaving, were ur bearings. WERE :)

swap it out and boost a new one.

yea, damn that sucks. hopefully i can jus save enough up soon so i can get another d15b or maybe just use my spare z6 block with the d15b head

metal shavings= bad, just be sure to correct the problem on your next motor, so it doesn't happen again

this motor isnt totally gone, if i was to put rod bearings in and a new oil pump, timing belt and water pump it should run good?

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

go get a z6 longblock for a couple hundie...check your journals on the crank, but chances are they are toast too

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

well i have a spare z6 block, i guess ill be using that with the d15b head and boosting it

im pretty sure that motor has a windage tray in the pan

a friend of mine drove his CRX 205 km/h in 4th gear some time. and did this almost every weekend. last week he heard a ticking sound. it was 1 rod bearing. it was broken, he replaced it the next day, drove 1000km and 1 week later the same sound came back, now he replaced all 4 of them.
you can see on the color of the damaged bearing that its fucked (or scratches). new should B gray- aluminium color. old is a brown color. he was lucky his crack was still good.

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

how far is 205km is miles? cause i drove no more than 4-5 miles in 4th going about 35-40

i made it about 30 miles with a serious knock before the engine wouldnt run. the crank was fuxored:)

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

exactly same thing happened to me, i had to change my crank pulley cause someone dropped it on the floor during my rebuild and it had cracked.. i went on and bought a cheaper one which was much lighter than stock the motor was rebuil i used it for a couple of days and one day the oil light came on and i took apart the oil pan to find lots of small metal shavings in the oil, what made the light go on was that thing that sucks the oil from the pan to the pump was getting completely filled with the metal shavings and the pump couldnt suck enough oil. changed the crank pulley with a stock one balanced it cleaned the inside but it could stand for only a month before minor knocking started...
i rebuilt it again and no problem at the moment... my advice dont use crappy, cheap crank pulleys and if you plan to use a good and lightened one make sure you get it balanced..

well sound like you spun a bearing. i think its time for a new engine. I say spend your motor on another motor rather than rebuilding the D15

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

you can get a complete D15B7 every day of the week for $85.00. Just swap in one for $85 and be careful. You definately toasted the rod bearings as well as the oil pump and crank. Then motor's shot. sorry to say man, but it happens... from missing a shift and putting my D16Z6 back into 1st instead of 3rd I hit 8,992 rpm, which i believe caused me to stretch the rod bolts.... lose oil pressure ...... and just spun the bearings..... it sucks but ??? all i can say is hopefully my Z6 oil pump is still good.... i'm kinda weary to use a B7 oil pump on a mini-me/turbo setup that's already got 150,XXX on it. Even though it is in good condition....

Re: PLEASE HELP!! Oil light came on tonite, don't know why.

jus going to use the z6 block with the d15b head and boost it until i can get another d15b or something.
