pistons in sleeve with slight rust

ok i'm rebuilding a getto b7 motor bought it for 50 with gear on crank welded on ran it for about 9 mounths and the crank snout broke off at the weld lol motor still ran but no way to put the pully back on but thats the history of the motor any way i took the head off and its been setting in my barn for about 6 mounths now i have a new crank for it but there is a light rust on the sleeves the rings where still good when i pullled the head so my question is can i just swap the crank out and let the sleeves ride or do yall thank its nessary to pull the pistons buy new rings and hone it

---- man just run it and let the piston rings scrap the rust off for you. problem solved. :6

If you are dead set against removing the slugs:

you can bring each one as loas possible (easy without the crank) and hone it from top then bottom.

Use Naval Jelly on the rust, and clean the hell outta the block

Still could have problems. Why not just pull em out, hone the cylinders, and go with new rings. Would do wonders for an old motor.

I've gotten a few flood damaged engines recently, and the consensus is that the rust actually protects the bore. If there is a lot of moisture/evaporation cycling, then actual deep corrosion takes place... but if she's filled with water it's probably a buildable core. Always requires an overhone, though.

If you have some minor minor surface rust... post pics... you can probably just wipe it off with penetrating oil and steel wool.

while you're already there do the job right, pull the slugs and clean that bitch, and new rings, nows the time to do it right? not in 5000 miles when you start blowing smoke out yo' ass end :3
