Piston and rod decisions
 

So, I have this sleeved y8 block just kinda hangin out on the engine stand in my kitchen, and I am a little stuck on what to stuff inside the bitch. The crank is being micropolished and balanced at the moment, so now i am looking for opinions on what to stuff in her.

My first decisions were pauter rods, and cp pistons. Pauter rods being the better part of a grand is making me look for alternatives. I would like the rods to handle everything I throw at them and then some, so I think the eagle rods may not be exactly what i am looking for. Are there any other companies I can look at that have strong con rods for a reasonable price ($600 or so)?

Better Yet, If I could find a set of rods and pistons that can handle in the neighborhood of 400whp for around $1K that would be ideal.

Any ideas on whats a solid tried and true setup to run that will handle my goals?

You will not make enough power to break a Eagle rod.Pistons just get whatever you want CP,Wiseco,JE etc.

Tuner Toys rods and your choice of pistons should put you well below $1k.

You dont think 400 whp will break a rod? It may seem like a stupid and newbish question, but the reliability portion of the car must remain. I will NOT drive around with it like that, however it will be an occasional track slut.

its possible do break a forged eagle rod at idle making no hp so @ 400 it is possible but with a good tune unlikely

When a stock LS rod stuffed into a D16 is good for 9500 rpms worth of tensile load, and 300 whp worth of compressive load... how much do you think it takes?

You're going to run into all sorts of teething problems to hit 400 whp, a power level at which an inexpensive TunerToys rod isn't going to flinch. You're wondering if an Eagle, or even a "lowly" TT rod will fail at those power levels? Yes, it or an Eagle or a Pauter will snap in a heartbeat if you expect to detonate on it and have it take it just because you bought a "forging," or a "set of $1000 rods," or something else along those lines that has nothing to do with anything.

People have hit 300-330 whp on stock D16 bottom ends for short durations, with good tuning, which means zero detonation. You see where I'm going here? Stop masturbating over which is the bigger pricetag, or is the most hyped, or will get you the most approval from a bunch of swinging dicks a heterosexual man could care less about the opinions of, and start worrying about what is important.
