hey yall i have a ls motor thats been ported both exhaust and intake side.. i dont kno how this engine suposed to run but its so slow in my 94 civic hatch.. its so bad i'm loosing to my fren stock 89 si hatch. could the previous owner over do the porting.. it looks fine. the head is clean and i've done the valve adjustment and played around with the timing ( now at 0 degrees).
do i need cams with the porting???
what can i do to fix this problem because i kno this engine cant be that slow ( gettin main power at 4200 rpms)..??

yes..over porting will cause power loss. air velocity will be changed and air coming and exiting the head will be affected by wierd turbulance. ask when and were the job was done. but for power...humm....i've had an ls in my 92 hatch before. and it was pretty slow...alittle better then the d16z6 only....but that was it. but it may be something else. hope this helps

Get a turbo, some nawwwwz, or a V8.

It's maybe just that your car is heavier than your friends stock si.
uhmmm that engine doesn't have a lot of power, but it does have a lot of potential and mmore displacement.
boost that thing. give 15 psi and see if it's slow ;)

i'm confused :-\ why is everyone saying that a swapped in B18a/b is not that fast in a hatch? i would think it would help pretty damn good! not like a b16 vtec or better but remember the ls has more torque than all those engines!!! i'm just thinking that the ls swap in a hatch or crx would be a very good increase next to a dohc vtec. i would think he would pull on some 00 si's on the jump!?!? i'm lost...please excuse me

the ls have a lot of torque but the torque curve is shitty with out a good head like a b16 so either way the b16 vtec will still kill it..
but my problem is that the engine is so slow i'm loosing to a stock integra b18. the ecu i have is the one that came in a 94 integra gs. the car cant be this slow.. its probably runing very very high 16's.
do i need a new head?
i've already did my timing back to stock i even tried advanceing it and retarting a few degrees. the port job is equal to the exhaust/intake gaskets.
i just need this car to run better b4 i turbo it,because even if i turbo and this problem isnt fix i'll still be slow..

i dont know what to tell you, sounds like you got a problem! i know for a fact its not suppose to be that slow...get a compression check or something that may help you narrow down the options... :-\

Ported heads are really damn finicky...you can port the hell out of a head, but if it has a stock throtle body, and old air filter in the wrong location then you are most definatly losing power.

Make sure the air path to the head is UNOBSTRUCTED and larger then normal. You might also think about fuel upgrades, your engine may be overly lean with the ported head, make some hard pulls at low speed in a high gear and listen for pinging.

Check your timing on the cams and on distributor, adjust as nessicary.

Also with a severaly ported head your hp curve is going to be severly narrowed, your peak power is going to be made higher up on the rev band, you may not have the ability to get the engine up this fast (do not try to rev hard w/o valve train upgrades) Try shifting later.
